1964 Oldsmobile – the New Intermediates Bow

Totally new mid-sized GM vehicles were released in 1964.  No longer Unit Body – they were traditional body-on-frame cars the size of a 1957 Chevrolet. Introduced independently from the GTO, the Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 featured an outstanding 310 HP 330 CID V-8 and super-tight handling package that the motoring press raved about. “442” stood for: “4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed transmission, and dual exhausts”. The nomenclature would stay but the meaning would change.

1964 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1964 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Cars

NOTE: Vista Cruiser was considered a special separate model line and is not covered here.

The new intermediate F-85 and Cutlass now rode a conventional body-on-frame chassis which it shared with the other newly introduced “A-body” cars – Chevrolet Chevelle, Buick Special and Pontiac Tempest. Wheelbase grew to 115 inches, overall length to 203 inches, and weight by more than 300 pounds.

Both the 215 CID aluminum V-8 and the Roto-Hydra-Matic transmission were discontinued in favor of a new cast-iron small-block V-8 of 330 CID and an optional two-speed Jetaway automatic transmission with variable-pitch stator. Buick’s 225 CID V-6 was the base engine. It was the first time that Oldsmobile used a six-cylinder engine since the Oldsmobile Seventy Six was discontinued in 1950.

The body styles of the previous model returned, and the 4-4-2 model, derived from the BO-9 police package, was also introduced in March. It was a $285.00 option on all models except the Station Wagon. It was, as we now know, an answer to the new intermediate muscle car market created by the Pontiac GTO.

Historical
Sales increased to 173,816 units – 38.5% above 1963’s numbers.

The 330 CID V-8 was the only “drawing board new” engine in the 1964 cars. It was a cast-iron light-weight casting with a short deck design. Bore and stroke are 3.937″ x 3.385″, and using the 4.50″ bore centers of the old 394 CID  engine so machine tooling would not have to be changed. It was designed and built with a capability for displacement increases (as we know it would soon become a “Big Block” and went all the way to 455 CID).  See the 1964 Olds F-85 AMA Specifications Sheet for details HERE.

The famous “442” option package was released for all F-85/Cutlass models – except the Station wagon. The idea behind this package was to take advantage of the highly touted Option B09 Police Package whose superb handling and top notch straight line performance surprised many. . See the 1964 442 Salesman’s Brochure HERE and the famous Motor Trend Magazine article on the car HERE.

  • The F-85 Deluxe could have the 442 option in the 4-door sedan ONLY.
  • Cutlass could have the 442 option in the 2-door pillared coupe, the hardtop coupe and the convertible.

Key in the 442 option was the 310 HP 330 CID V-8 and the Police Pursuit handling package. You can see a test of the 442 in August 1964 Motor Trend magazine HERE.
