1970 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1970 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Car Facts
NOTE: Vista Cruiser was considered a special separate model line and is not covered here.
The 1970 F-85 and Cutlass models were available in seven body styles: the pillared Sports Coupe available in the F-85, Cutlass or 442, the hardtop Holiday Coupe for the Cutlass and 442 , and a new more formal notchback Holiday Coupe, only offered on the Cutlass Supreme. A four-door hardtop Holiday Sedan, a four-door pillared Town Sedan, and a convertible rounded out the line. The traditional flat-top station wagon called the Custom Cruiser was now part of the upscale Vista-Cruiser station wagon line albeit still on the 116 inch wheelbase. Counting all trim level and body style permutations, Oldsmobile’s 1970 lineup included 15 different intermediate models.
For one year only, the W-30 and W-31 are both an appearance and performance package. All previous go-fast parts are included as well as a special OAI hood, HD suspension and special aluminum intake manifolds.
The 442 now was standard with the larger 455 CID V-8 as previously used in the 1968–69 Hurst/Olds. The 400 CID V-8 was discontinued with a 455 CID 320 HP V-8 as an option in the Cutlass models and the Vista Cruiser wagons. The three- and four-speed manual transmissions were carried over from previous years and still with Hurst shifters used on floor-mounted three-speeds and all four-speeds. The two-speed Jetaway transmission was discontinued with the three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic now the sole automatic. In a new twist, Cutlass coupes with optional Strato bucket seats and Turbo Hydra-Matic and the 442 could be equipped with the Hurst Dual-Gate shifter and required the extra-cost center console.
Two new models joined the line, the Cutlass Supreme “SX” and the Rallye 350. The SX was initially much like the original Turnpike Cruiser equipped with a 445 CID V-8 and two-barrel carburetor – as well as FE-2 heavy duty suspension, but that changed in mid-year with the standard 365 HP 442 V-8 replacing the original engine. The Oldsmobile Rallye 350 was intended to be a value-priced high-performance model using the 350 CID 4-barrl V-8. The Rallye 350 was an appearance package (coded W45) with mandatory options and could be ordered on the Cutlass S Holiday or Sports Coupe as well as on the F-85 Sports Coupe.

The 442 would now sport 455 CID and 365 HP. The W-32 package was replaced with the new automatic transmission 370 HP W-30, utilizing a new 285/287 degree camshaft while the manual trans car retained the aggressive 328° camshaft. both received the OAI hood and an aluminum intake. The OAI hood was now available across the board as option W-25. New for this year was the W-26 dual Gate Shifter, the W-27 aluminum axle carrier, the W-35 rear spoiler, and D-35 dual sport mirrors.
For more info, see the 1970 W-Machines Brochure HERE.
All Rallye 350 models were painted in Sebring Yellow with urethane-coated bumpers. Also included were special black and orange decals, blacked out grille and yellow-painted 7″ wide Super Stock II wheels without trim rings, G70×14″ blackwall tires. The engine was the L74 350 CID 310 HP V-8 engine with OAI. Required options were the OAI hood, dual exhaust with 442-style outlets, 3.23:1 axle, heavy-duty suspension, sports mirrors and a sports steering wheel. See the Unique Brochure HERE.

The Cutlass Supreme SX option was available on the Cutlass Supreme notchback coupe and Convertible. It consisted of a standard Cutlass Supreme model with a 455 CID V-8 and dual exhausts utilizing the 442 rear bumper outlets. HD suspension was optional, as was most of the 442 equipment, but NOT the OAI hood. In February of 1970 the 455 CID 365 HP 442 engine would replace the 320 HP 2-barrel version. See the SX Option sell sheet HERE.

The Olds Cutlass and 442 were both available with the Indy Pace Car option. The package was primarily a decal package available on both the 442 and the Cutlass Supreme convertible. Many of the decals were not applied at the factory but were to be applied by the dealership when the car was prepped for the customer, most notably the large “Official Pace Car” door decals. See the part numbers, paint and decal placement instructions HERE.
