General Year Information – 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle

Chevelles were mildly restyled for their second year. The nose had a slight “V” outward, and a new grille was used. At the rear were new tail lamps. Otherwise the car was outwardly the same as the 1964 car. There were now three distinct lines: Chevelle 300, Chevelle 300 DeLuxe, Chevelle Malibu, and Chevelle Super Sport.

A Super Sport 396 was released called Option RPO Z16. This “SS-396” package included a 375 horsepower, 396 CID V-8, with dual exhausts and chrome accents, four-speed transmission, special shock absorbers and HD suspension, 160 mile per hour speedometer and AM/FM stereo multiplex radio. It had specific exterior trim that included Malibu SS emblems mounted on front fenders, special rear cove panel and “396 Turbo-Jet” front fender emblems. Also it had a “SS 396” emblem mounted in the dash. Fifteen-inch wide simulated mag style wheel covers were included. The cost for RPO 216 was $1,501 and a total of 201 cars were so equipped.
