This car was in a single model series – a hardtop coupe with the 345 HP Starfire V-8. The 330 CID V-8 bowed.

1964 Oldsmobile Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1964 Oldsmobile
Starfire
he 1964 model appeared very similar to the 1963. Curb weight was down, but overall length was up to 215.3 inches. Sales dropped further, to 13,753 coupes and 2,410 convertibles. The Starfire now shared its basic bodyshell with the new and lower-priced Jetstar I hardtop coupe which also hampered sales. Especially since the Jetstar 1 also used the Starfire’s 345 HP 394 CID “Ultra High Compression” Rocket V-8, with a price tag that was over $500 lower than the Starfire.
98
In 1964 the top of the line 98 series was largely unchanged from 1963 and still was offered in six body styles in 2-door, 4-door and convertible configurations. Standard equipment included Roto Hydramatic; power steering, brakes, windows and seats; windshield washer; special wheel discs; clock; courtesy and map lights and padded dash. Upholstery was a variety of colored cloth, vinyl and leather.
Jetstar I
The Jetstar I was designed as both a lower-priced companion to the more luxurious Starfire, which had a starting price of over $4,100. It was envisioned as a competitor to the successful Pontiac Grand Prix, which sat in the Jetstar I’s $3,500–$3,600 price range. It was offered as two-door hardtop coupe only. The Jetstar I shared the Starfire’s squared-off roofline, with concave rear window, which differed from the convertible-inspired rooflines featured on other Olds 88 two-door hardtop coupes. Conceptually this might have been a reasonable idea, but in reality it took sales away from the Starfire.
Standard equipment included the Starfire’s 345 HP 394 CID Rocket V-8. However, it contained lees luxurious content with automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, leather interior, and distinctive brightwork trim either lacking or optional. Included were bucket seats, center console, carpeting, full wheel covers, and padded instrument panel. A three-speed column-shift manual transmission was standard, with a three-speed Roto-Hydramatic automatic with console-mounted T-handle shifter optional. The pricing and content added even more buyer confusion. Adding only automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes brought the Jetstar I’s price close to $4,000 – just below the more highly optioned base Starfire coupe. A total of 16,084 were produced for 1964, slightly below Starfire output. When all was said and done, the combined sales of both the Jetstar I and the Starfire exceeded 1963 Starfire sales by around 8,000 units. Success?
Super 88
1964 was the last for the Super 88 series, which was limited to the two four-door body styles—the Celebrity Sedan and Holiday Sedan. Total production for both four-door Super 88 models reached 19,514 assemblies for the model year.
Dynamic 88
With the introduction of the Jetstar 88, the Dynamic 88 models were elevated a rung up the ladder for the 1964 model year. Only the Dynamic 88s could be in five body styles: four-door pillared Celebrity Sedan and hardtop Holiday Sedan, two-door hardtop Holiday Coupe, convertible and 2- or 3-seat Fiesta station wagon. The Jetstar 88 was not offered as a station wagon.
Jetstar 88
New that year was the introduction of price leader for the full-sized Oldsmobile series, the Jetstar 88, which used the same full-size body as other 88 models but also shared key components with that year’s redesigned F-85 intermediate. The Jetstar 88 used the smaller 330 V8 and Jetaway two-speed automatic transmission in place of the 394-cubic-inch V8 and Roto-Hydramatic found in other Oldsmobiles, as well as utilizing 9.5-inch drum brakes which were less effective than the 11-inch drums found on other full-sized Olds models.
Note on Station Wagons
1964 was also the last year for Oldsmobile to offer full-sized station wagons until the 1971 model year. Oldsmobile’s full-size Fiesta wagons introduced in 1957 had never been strong sellers. Production per model (Super or Dynamic) was always lees than 15,000 units. The division recognized that families wanting wagon s were likely younger and more tuned into the new mid-sized car, so they introduced the new Vista Cruiser wagon in 196 It featured a raised roofline and skylights over the rear seat and cargo area. The models were offered with six- or nine-passenger seating. The Vista Cruiser used a six-inch stretched wheelbase version of the mid-sized F-85/Cutlass.

A few years in the making, Oldsmobile released its lightweight cast 330 CID V-8, Designed primarily for the mid-size line, it was used as an economy V-8 in the new Jetstar 88 full size cars. Solid an dependable with great HP potential, the engine would be one of the longest-lasting V-8s at General Motors, used until the late 80s. Of note, the 330 and its to be released 425 CID big block were designed to be machined on the old 394 CID line and bore centers remained the same.

The Jetstar I was developed as a bridge between what was perceived as a gap between the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Starfire, in an attempt to gain sales in this luxury performance car segment. While the idea was good, it likely stole sales from the Starfire and took in few new buyers. when the dust settles it increased the segment for Olds by about 8 thousand but at the expense of about 10 thousand Starfire models – where the profit margin was higher.

The two speed variable stator transmission was developed by Buick for use in GM’s new mid-size cars (except Chevrolet), but found application in certain “economy” full size cars as well. The variable stator allowed the transmission to appear to have more gears than just two. In Oldsmobile’s case, it was the only automatic transmission available in the new Jetstar 88.

In a surprising naming decision a new entry-level full size car was launched – called “Jetstar 88”. Given that the new Jetstar I was an upscale luxury performance coupe, confusion reigned among buyers, some of whom thought the model’s coupe and convertible were performance cars. Some coupe and convertible buyers voiced complaints.
