1967 Chevrolet Camaro Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Chevrolet Camaro

The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro was introduced by Chevrolet in the fall of 1966 for the 1967 model year. It used a brand-new rear-wheel-drive GM F-body platform and was available as a 2-door hardtop, and convertible. The F-body was shared with the Pontiac Firebird for all generations. The standard engine was a 230 CID Chevrolet I-6, with 283, 327, and 350 CID Chevrolet V-8s available.

Chevrolet recognized that there would be a need to offer a wide variety of packages and options was to be competitive with other the manufacturers in the pony car market. The Camaro’s standard drive-train was either a 230 CID I-6 engine rated at 140 HP or the venerable 283 CID V-8. There were 8 different engines available this year and several optional transmissions. A four-speed manual was available with any engine. The two-speed “Powerglide” automatic transmission was available as well. A short-lived semi-automatic “Torque-Drive” two-speed transmission was available on six-cylinder models.

Total production included 602 Camaro coupes with the Z-28 option; 64,842 Camaros with the Rally Sport trim option of which 10,675 were convertibles; 34,411 Camaro coupes and convertibles with the Super Sport option many with Rally Sport option as well, and approximately 100 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replicas.

NOTE: The major option packages; “RS” “SS” and “Z/28” will be discussed in detail below.

The Z/28 performance package was designed to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am Series. It included a solid-lifter 302 CID V-8, 4-speed transmission, power disc brakes, and featured two wide stripes down the hood and trunk lid. For More info – see the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Press Announcement HERE.

A new small block V-8 was announced for the Camaro line only – a 350 CID V-8 with a bore of 4.002″ and anew stroke of 3.480″. Rated at 295 Horsepower and Torque of 380 ft. lbs, it would find its way into other Chevrolets in 1968 and eventually replace the 327 CID powerplant. The base model featured: slender body sill moldings, black plastic grille, single-unit headlights, grille-mounted parking lights, small, bright metal hubcaps, tail lights with bright bezels and built-in backup lights, windshield pillar and rear belt moldings and manual-operating top on convertible.

Standard interior features included color-keyed all vinyl trim with Strato-bucket front seats and scuff-resistant cowl side panels with ventilator grilles, color-keyed carpeting, front arm rests with bright bases, cigarette lighter, built-in instrument panel ash tray, automatic front door switches for dome or courtesy lights, locking glove compartment, friction-type ventipanes and, in convertibles, built-in arm rests and dual courtesy lights.

In addition to the base model, the Rally Sport Camaro adds to the appearance. On the exterior there are “RS” emblems on the grille and on the rear fuel filler cap, a full-width, black lattice grille with concealed headlights, lower body side molding, a black accent just below body side molding (with certain colors); color-keyed body accent stripes, special styling for parking/turning lights at the front, sports-styled backup lights, and a distinctive edged-in-black taillight treatment with two lamps in each taillight unit for driving, braking and turn signal indication, bright metal front and rear wheel opening moldings, and bright drip gutter molding on sport coupes.

In the interior, there is a “RS” emblem on the steering wheel center.

On the exterior of the SS350 there is unique color-keyed hood striping plus simulated louvers on the hood. “SS” letters are placed at the front of the front fenders and an “SS 350” emblem is in the center of the grille. At the rear, there is a “SS 350” emblem on the fuel filler cap. On the inside a “SS 350” emblem appears in the steering wheel center. SS 350 models are appropriately shod with red stripe tires.

The SS 350 was standard with the 350 CID 295 HP V-8, with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

The Z/28 option code was introduced in December 1966 for the 1967 model year. This option package was not mentioned in any sales literature, and it was unknown to most buyers. The Z/28 option featured a high-output small-block 302 CID V-8, designed for racing in Trans-Am racing series. It had an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary 780 CFM Holley carburetor. The Z/28 came with upgraded suspension, power front disc brakes, and a 4-speed Muncie close-ratio manual transmission. Posi-traction was optional. Wide racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid could be deleted at no charge, “302” front fender emblems came on 1967 cars, with the “Z/28” emblems in late 1968. Advertised power of the 302 was listed at 290 HP at 5300 RPM.
