1968 Chevelle Facts, Figures, and Specifications
The Chevelle was completely and attractively restyled for model year 1968, however there were clues to the previous year in the front and rear fascias. One additional body style was added to the line – that being a new station wagon.
1968 – New Styling but a Link to the Past
The new Chevrolet Chevelle had the long hood/short deck characteristics of all the new GM mid-size cars, with the front fenders swept back and cut under the feature line. There were two wheelbases: 112 inches for 2-doors and 116 inches for 4-doors and wagons. The 307 CID V-8 bowed.

1968 Chevelle Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Facts
The Chevelle was completely restyled for model year 1968, and one additional body style added to the line in a new station wagon called the “Nomad” – brought back from the previous full size car line. The new styling was part of GM’s overall mid-size car look with a long hood/short deck approach. The front fenders swept back and cut under the feature line.A small bulge defined the rear fender. The roof line was new as well.
Chevrolet was careful, however, to retain some of the previous car’s “look” by making the front and rear fascias similar, especially in the front grille/headlight area.
Two wheelbases were provided, the shorter for two-doors and the longer for four-doors. The standard V-8 now displaced 307 cubic inches – replacing the 283 CID small block V-8 for all Chevelles except for the SS 396 series.
The Malibu line received a new and special “Concours” four-door hardtop with more upscale interior trim. The Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe station wagons were called “Nomad”- with the base Nomad new to the Chevelle 300 line.
The El Camino was also restyled and incorporated the new body style into its pickup look. It utilized the 116 inch wheelbase of the 4-door sedans and station wagons. Engine choices would remain as in 1967.

Larger vehicle weights in the full size line and increased emphasis on emissions resulted in the retirement of the 283 CID Small Block. It was applied to all lines as well. The 307 CID version had the same bore of 3.875″ but a stroke of 3.25″. See the specifications in the AMA Spec Sheets HERE.

The Nomad name was applied to the Chevelle 300 Deluxe wagon and was also added as a new model to the base Chevelle 300 line. This allowed a base trim wagon missing from the mid-size line.

The base Chevelle 300 line was the entry-level Chevelle. Other than the windshield surround and ventipane frames, practically no chrome moldings were used. The new front bumper was straighter than the 1967 offering with the only openings being large squares flanking the license plate, plus smaller, outboard rectangles incorporating amber parking light lenses. The horizontal, dual headlamps were mounted in individual, bright metal bezels of square shape and the full-width grille featured a fine grid work of cross-hatched moldings with black-finished air slot directly above. “Chevelle” in script, was placed on the front fenders behind the wheel openings at mid-body height and also above the left headlight.
Standard equipment included all GM safety features, front arm rests, heater and defroster, base Six or V-8, and 7.35 x 14 two-ply tires. Base station wagons, however, used the larger 7.75 x 14 black walls. Standard interiors were all textured vinyl in Blue, Gold or Black.
What distinguished the Chevelle 300 Deluxe model was the ribbed, bright metal rocker panels below the door Chevrolet badge on grille center and rear deck latch panel. Four-doors had chrome window sill moldings, while two-doors had chrome trim along the upper window frame. As on all Chevelles, when a V-8 was added, a black, rectangular engine call-out badge was positioned ahead of the front fender side marker lens and framed in the same band of bright metal. The all-vinyl textured seating surfaces used in Chevelle 300 Deluxe models came only in Black, although Blue, Black or Gold fabric/vinyl combinations were also provided.
Other equipment, above the basic found on the “300” included a left-hand outside rear view mirror, front shoulder belts, door switch dome lamp, lane change turn signals, key-less door locking; suspended accelerator pedal; backup lights and self-adjusting brakes.
The Malibu was trimmed as the top model in the Chevelle lineup. Like the 300 Deluxe, a Chevrolet insignia was placed in the center of its grille. The Malibu, however, did not have the 300 Deluxe model’s matching insignia on the rear deck latch panel. Instead, the panel was banded in chrome, with a Chevelle script near the right rear tail lamp. And the tail lamps were different, as the Malibu backup lights were re-positioned into the back bumper. Other differentiators included “Malibu” in script on the front fender sides, chrome trim along the front feature line and also extending along the lower side feature line, twin pinstripes along the upper side feature line and additional window frame accents. Standard equipment included that of the 300 Deluxe and added hide-away two-speed wipers, Deluxe steering wheel, illuminated heater controls, ignition alarm system, crank-operated ventipanes, side marker lights, flo-thru ventilation and wheel covers.
Interior trim choices varied with body style. New for 1968 was a special “Concours” four-door hardtop. It came with all-vinyl seating, lockable glove box with light, extra-thick foam cushioned seats, color-keyed to wall carpeting, black-accented wheel openings, black-trimmed lower body accents, ribbed bright metal rear deck lid latch panel plate, “Concours” scripts, chrome wheel lip moldings, special oval steering wheel with horn tabs, and wood-grained dash panel inlays. Its true name was “Concours Sport Sedan”.
Standard Malibu interior trim included the regular fabric/vinyl patterns in Gold, Black, Blue and Grey Green; or all-vinyl in Teal, Gold, Black, Blue, Red and Parchment/Black. The Concours Sport Sedan’s special Custom fabric came in a choice in Gold, Blue, Black or Grey-Green.
In addition to the Concours Sport Sedan, in the regular model line, there was a separate Concours Estate wagon as a sub-series for 1968. It included only one model, a luxurious station wagon which was specially trimmed. It came standard with all GM safety features, plus all-vinyl upholstery, lighted glove box light, extra-thick foam cushioned seats, simulated Walnut exterior side and rear paneling, hide-away two-speed wipers, chrome wheel lip moldings, and the special oval steering wheel with the horn tabs.
Chevelle’s “SS 396″performance package for 1968 included floor-mounted shifter, all-vinyl upholstery, and full carpeting. Other extras that were standard on the Coupe and Convertible included fender mounted side marker lamps, lower body side moldings with front and rear extensions, black-accented finish below the feature line front to rear, specific “SS 396” identification at grille and latch panel centers, blacked-out grille, black finished rear deck panel plate, F70 x 14 four-ply rated special Red or White Stripe tires, concealed windshield wipers, full wheel covers with SS center medallions, and “396” engine call-out badges ahead of side marker lenses, and the standard 325 horsepower 396 cubic inch V-8. 350 and 375 HP versions of the 396 were available as extra cost options.
The El Camino model came in Base and Custom trim. The Base model was trimmed as a Chevelle 300, and the Custom was trimmed as a Malibu. Colors were as set for the regular line.
