General Year Information – 1964 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser

The Vista Cruiser was introduced on February 4, 1964, as a 1964 model, based on the Oldsmobile Cutlass/F-85 Series. The Vista Cruiser was noted for its a raised roof behind the skylight and lateral glass panels over the rear cargo area that were fixed-glass, roof-mounted skylights (with sun visors for the second row passengers).

It shared its body style with the Buick Sportwagon only and was not available on the Chevrolet Chevelle or Pontiac Tempest station wagon lines. The Vista Cruiser had a wheelbase that was 5.0 inches longer than that of the Cutlass/F-85 sedan. A third row of forward-facing passenger seating was available as an option. Access to the third row was gained by a split-folding second row seat that could be retracted forward.

The Vista Cruiser was available as the Standard or Custom trim package. Included as standard equipment were coil spring suspension, a three-speed manual transmission, self-adjusting brakes, and an aluminized exhaust. Cloth or “Morocceen” vinyl upholstery was offered. Unlike the F-85 and Cutlass line, the 330 CID V-8 was the only engine offering. Surprisingly, the a 4-speed manual transmission was listed as an option.

In 1964, the Vista Cruiser was one of three station wagons offered by Oldsmobile, the others being the F-85 station wagon which shared the “A” platform intermediates, and the full-sized GM B platform Dynamic 88 Fiesta. This would change in 1965 with the Vista Cruiser replacing the Dynamic 88 wagon.

First year production was 14,000 units.

NOTE: The 1964 Vista Cruiser was NOT listed in the Oldsmobile car brochures due to its late introduction. It did appear in the later issue of the Oldsmobile Station Wagons brochure, however.
