1960 Dodge Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1960 Dodge Facts
NOTE: There were no mid-size Dodge models in 1960, all Dodge cars were full size. The Dodge Dart line for 1960 were full size cars set on a 118 inch wheelbase and was based on the Plymouth platform. There were three series the entry-level Seneca, the mid-range Pioneer, and the well-appointed Phoenix. Wagons used the Chrysler full size wheelbase of 122 inches. The Dodge Matador and Polara was even larger and were set on the Chrysler line’s 122 inch wheelbase, like the station wagons.
Name Changes
Gone were the Coronet, Royal, and Custom Royal nameplates. In place were the Dart 118 inch wheelbase line names of Seneca, Pioneer, and Phoenix, and in the 122 inch line Matador and Polara.
Dart
The Dodge Dart line was introduced for the 1960 model year. The Dart was at once a great response to the impact of the Great recession and a marketing masterstroke. They were downsized large cars using the Plymouth platform so as to gain a foothold in the low-priced car segment for the Dodge dealer network. Dodge dealers had been selling Plymouths since 1930, but divisional restructuring took the Plymouth brand away from the Dodge dealer network. With the impending cancellation of Chrysler’s upper level DeSoto brand, the higher level Dodge products were to be pushed upmarket to cover this gap, while using the Dart (Plymouth-based products with more features) to gain lower-level Dodge customers.
The Dart sedans and coupes were based on the “Unibody” Plymouth platform with a 118 inch wheelbase, shorter than the standard-size, 122 inch, Dodge senior line. All Dart station wagons used the same 122 inch wheelbase as the upmarket Polara wagons, as did Plymouth wagons. The Dart line was offered in three trim levels: the basic Seneca, mid-range Pioneer, and premium Phoenix. The Dart came standard with the new the 225 CID slant-six. The 318 CID V-8 with two-barrel carburetor was standard equipment on certain Phoenix and Pioneer body styles, with the 318 four-barrel and the 361 CID and 383 CID V-8s as optional. Brakes were 11-inch drums.
Sales of the new Dart were greater than those of the full-size Dodge Matador and Dodge Polara. After the economic downturn of 1958–59, Dodge production for 1960 rebounded to 367,804 cars, the division’s highest total to date, and good for sixth place behind Chevrolet, Ford, Plymouth, Rambler, and Pontiac. 87% of Dodge’s volume consisted of the low-profit Dart line, compared to the upmarket Matador and Polara, of which only 41,000 were sold for the 1960 model year.
Polara & Matador
The 1960 Matador and Polara were built on a 122-inch longer wheelbase along with the 1960 DeSoto and Chrysler models. The 1960 model year also marked the first year that all Chrysler models, except for the Imperial, used ‘Unibody” construction. Styling cues carried over from 1959 models. The Polara was available as a two-door convertible, two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop sedan, four-door hardtop station wagon, and conventional (pillared) four-door sedan. The Matador excluded the convertible offering.
The 1960 cars continued with the make’s styling hallmarks of stacked “jet pod” tail lights. However, the size of the lights was significantly increased compared to those of the previous years, with the lower lights set into the rear bumper. The design also incorporated Dodge’s trademark shortened tail fins, which, on the Polara, included small vertical tail light lenses placed on the vertical surface at the back of the fin. The clipped fin tended to visually exaggerate the length of the “jet pods” that housed the taillights. On the full-sized Dodges, the fin started on the rear door on the four-door models and continued to the back of the car. The front end featured a small grille of eight stacks of anodized aluminum rectangles on Polara and six stacks on the Matador. It was nested in a massive chrome front bumper assembly.
The Polara featured better interior fabrics and trim treatments than the Matador. The Polara models also received more exterior trim that included chrome stone guards aft of the rear wheel housings, a full-length chrome spear, and a broad chrome base to the chrome spear atop the headlight housings. The Matador’s interior featured cloth and vinyl bench seats with premium trim and an “X-within-an-X four-spoke steering wheel.” On both, the dashboard was “space-age-styled,” featuring a bridged-over sweep-style speedometer on top flanked by gauge pods and an optional “revolving turret clock” centered on the instrument panel. This “satellite-styled” clock featured a stationary pointer with the hour numerals on the top revolving dial, minutes on the lower dial, and the seconds by an orbiting red dot.
Other options included vacuum door locks on four-door models and new front swivel seats with a folding center armrest. The seat automatically rotated out upon opening the door and returned to position when closing the door. Standard engine on the Matador was the 295 HP 361 Cid V-8 wit 2-barrel carburetor. Standard engine on the Polara was the 325 HP 383 4-barrel V-8.
1960 Dodge Facts – Police Pursuit Cars
Both the 118 inch wheelbase and the 122 inch wheelbase cars offered a specific “police” engine option. But the true police specials were found on the 122 inch wheelbase favored by the California Highway Patrol. The “Seneca” Police Option was actually a rebadged Matador. These four-door sedans were essentially low-cost models equipped with rubber floor mats, gray vinyl interiors, and limited chrome trim. Check Out the AMA Specifications Sheet on 1960 Dodge “Seneca Police” HERE.
1960 Dodge Fats – Historical Information
In 1960, a Dart Phoenix driven by Norm Thatcher set three world records at Bonneville in the B-Supercharged Gas Coupe class. The supercharged 383 cubic inch V-8 powered hardtop achieved a speed of 191.8 miles per hour over the measured course. Dodge sales rebounded for 1960 year with over 350,000 units sold, of which over 300 thousand were the new short wheelbase Dart.

Early on, the Dart line was limited to 361 CID Ram Induction engine. In December, Dodge released the 383 Ram Induction Package to compliment the 361. The 383 was labeled D-500 “Special Order”. The engine was also available under the “Maximum Performance Police Packages”. You can explore these options by viewing the Special AMA Specifications Sheets HERE. NOTE: The 383 CID D-500 Ram Induction engine was always available in the Polara line.

While following the same styling theme of 1959, the body was completely altered with different grilles, fins and rear fascias. The Matador/Polara replaced the old Coronet/Royal/Custom Royal nameplates and wheelbase, and the new Plymouth-based Dart was added as a low-cost line, becomnig a direct competitor with Plymouth itself.
The Chrysler Corporation’s “Slant-Six” was the promotional name for an overhead valve I-6. Featuring a reverse-flow cylinder head and cylinder bank inclined at a 30-degree angle from vertical, it was introduced in 170 CID in the Valiant and 225 CID for full size cars for the 1960 model year.

1960 Dodge Facts – Notes on Dodge V-8 Engines
While Dodge had always been in the forefront of performance beginning in 1956 through 1959 with the famous D-500, the engine choices had been rather simple: perhaps two versions of the D-500 and some lesser HP V-8s, sometimes smaller in cubic inches than the D-500 offerings. But things changed in 1960 with the advent of the two model lines along with the advent of the ram induction engine, as well as a serious re-involvement in racing.
As a result, here is a simplified listing of the V-8s offered in 1960 and their applications:
-
- 230 HP 318 CID 2-Barrel V-8. Base V-8 in the Dart line only.
- 255 HP 318 CID V-8. The Power Pack V-8 in the Dart line was only available through December 1959. Discontinued thereafter.
- 295 HP 361 CID V-8. Base V-8 in the Matador line. Not available any other line.
- 310 HP 361 CID Long Ram V-8. Initial Offering D-500 in Dart Line only. Dual 4-barrel carburetors on 30″ long Ram tubes. Uses torque delivering 20/68 degree duration hydraulic camshaft.
- 325 HP 383 CID Polara V-8. Unique to Polara line. Mild camshaft and single 4-barrel carburetor only.
- 325 HP 383 CID Police V-8. Available in Dart, Matador, and Polara. Single 4-barrel carburetor. Uses aggressive 24/64 degree hydraulic camshaft.
- 330 HP 383 CID Police V-8. Available in Dart, Matador, and Polara. Dual 4-barrel in-line carbs. Uses aggressive 24/64 degree hydraulic camshaft.
- 330 HP 383 CID D-500 V-8. Available in Dart as Special Order, and optional in Matador, and Polara. 30″ long Ram tubes. Uses torque 20/68 camshaft.
- 330 HP 383 CID Police V-8. Available in Dart, Matador, and Polara. Dual 4-barrel carburetors on 30″ long Ram tubes. Uses aggressive 24/64 hydraulic camshaft with an even more radical 284 degree mechanical camshaft available as on option.
