General Year Information – 1970 Dodge Challenger

Significant Styling Changes

The Challenger line was positioned to compete against the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird in the upper end of the pony car market segment. This new for 1970 line offered buyers a whole new car to choose from. Two styles were available with a total of nine engines. While only two models were offered, a “Special Edition” was added as a luxury option.

Challengers featured a low profile with a full-width, scoop-like grille opening. The sides were of the “Coke-bottle” profile, with raised rear fenders tapering down at the taillights. Two large, rectangular taillights nearly filled the rear fascia, with a small, license plate width aluminum panel with the”Dodge”, in block letters. The R/T offered the “shaker” hood as an option.  The 426 CID “Street Hemi” was available.

Two versions were offered: the base Challenger (Code JH), and the sport model R/T (Code JS). However, beginning mid-model year, there was a “Special Edition” luxury coupe ( JH 29 and JS 29) that included as standard a vinyl roof with a “SE” medallions on the pillars, a smaller “formal” rear window, leather and vinyl combination bucket seats, and an overhead interior console that contained three warning lights (door ajar, low fuel, and seat belts).

Five different cubic inch V-8s were available: the 318, the 340, the 383, the 440 and the 426 Hemi.. The R/T model used  383 CID 335 HP V-8 (as was used in the Super Bee) as the standard engine. Options included the 340 CID, 290 HP Challenger T/A “Six-Pack”, with triple 2-barrel carburetors, a 440 CID 375 HP, the 440 Six-Pack with triple 2-barrel carburetors  and 390 HP, and the 425 HP 426 CID Hemi.  The 440- and Hemi-equipped cars received upgraded suspension components and structural reinforcements.

225 CID I-6 and 318, 340 and 383 4-barrel CID non-high performance came standard with 3-speed manual transmission. The 383 CID 2-barrel engine was only available only with the TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The Challenger T/A 290  and all the performance V-8s (383, 440 and 426) were only available with 4-speed manual or Torqueflite. A 4-speed manual was optional on all engines except the 225 CID Inline-6 and the aforementioned 2-barrel 383 CID V-8.

A mid-year introduction of a low-priced “Challenger Deputy”, was made to fill the space occupied by 6-cylinder base Firebirds, in an attempt to boost sales. It was a coupe with fixed rear quarter windows lacking some of the base car’s trim.

1970 Dodge Challenger Facts – Dodge in Racing

Dodge contracted Ray Caldwell’s Autodynamics in Marblehead, Massachusetts to run the factory Trans-Am team. Sam Posey drove the No.77 “sub-lime” painted car. Surprisingly this car Caldwell’s team built from a car taken off a local dealer’s showroom floor. When the No.76 was completed mid-season from a chassis provided by Dan Gurney’s All American Racers, Posey alternated between the two. Both cars ran the final two races, with Posey in the #77. Ronnie Bucknum drove the No.76 at Seattle, Washington, and Tony Adamowicz drove the car at Riverside, California.

The Challenger T/A scored a few top-three finishes, but lack of a development budget and the short-lived Keith Black built 303 CID  engines led to Dodge leaving the series at season’s end. A total of 2,399 T/As were made. A 1971 model using the 340 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor was planned and appeared in advertising, but was not produced due to Dodge withdrawing from the race series.

1970 Dodge Challenger Factoids

The Special Edition hardtop, available on either the base Challenger or on the R/T, added appearance, convenience, and comfort features. This more luxurious version included  a vinyl roof with a “SE” medallions on the pillars, a smaller rear window, leather and vinyl bucket seats, and an overhead interior console that contained three warning lights. Dodge’s street version of its race car was the Dodge Challenger T/A. Street versions  added a three 2-barrel carburetors to the 340 CID V-8. An air scoop was molded into the matte-black fiberglass hood and a low-restriction dual-outlet exhaust exited in chrome-tipped outlets in front of the rear wheels. Options included a TorqueFlite automatic or Hurst-shifted 4-speed transmission, 3.55:1 or 3.90:1 gear ratios. Thick dual side stripes, bold ID graphics, a fiberglass duck tail rear spoiler, and a fiberglass front spoiler were also included.

Base Challenger The base car was the Challenger. Standard equipment in Barracudas included high-back buckets with all-vinyl trim; integrated head rests; molded door and quarter trim panels; flood lighted instrument panel; three-spoke wood grain steering wheel; floor shift; carpeting; 225 cubic inch Six and E78-l 5 fiberglass belted tires.

Challenger 340. The Challenger 340 package was optional on the base models. The package included the 340 CID V-8 and the performance hood with air scoops, E60 x 15 tires, Rallye Suspension and “Scat Pack” decals on the rear windows. The “Bumblebee” stripe was optional at no extra cost.

Special Edition. Could be ordered as a base Challenger or a R/T. The SE had all Base or R/T items, plus Vinyl roof covering, smaller “formal” rear window, overhead interior consolette with warning lights, and leather/vinyl bucket seats.

R/T.  The ‘Cuda had all base Challenger equipment, plus, as a base engine, the 335 HP 4-barrel 383 CID “Magnum” V-8. It featured Rallye instrument cluster (clock, tachometer, trip odometer, 150 mph speedometer, and oil pressure gauge), variable speed wipers and washer,  heavy-duty suspension and drum brakes, and F70-14 white-letter tries. A longitudinal stripe or “Bumblebee” stripe was available at no extra cost.

Challenger T/A.  The Challenger T/A had all ‘R/T equipment, plus, as a base engine, the 290 HP Three 2-barrel 340 CID V-8. It featured heavy-duty suspension and drum brakes, T/A ornamentation, and E60x15 Goodyear Polyglas in the front, and G60x15 on the rear. It could be had with either 4-speed manual or 3-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission.  See “Challenger T/A Package Fully Disclosed” tab Section below for complete details on this package.

1970 Dodge Challenger Facts – Challenger T/A Package Fully Disclosed

Code W-1 340, referred to as the “340 Six pack”. The E55 engines were modified as follows: stress relieved, high nickel content block with filled oil pan rails, as well additional material added in the main bearing web area to allow for the addition of four bolt main caps. Cylinder heads (F08) were regular casting heads that had the pushrod holes drilled offset from the ports which would allow the ports to be highly modified.   The rocker arms were un-bushed ductile adjustable similar in style of the 426 Hemi. The intake manifold was an Edelbrock aluminum six pack manifold painted the engine color Mopar orange. Three Holly 2300 series carburetors were used with vacuum operated secondaries. (see Engine Section for Carb Numbers). A large oval shaped air cleaner that sealed to the hood rested over the top of all three carbs.

(N44) Dual transverse flow mufflers (the inlet and outlet were on the same end), located forward of the rear axle with side exiting chrome tipped exhaust pipes. The cars were shipped with the exhaust tips in the trunk and installed by the dealer. High flow cast iron exhaust manifolds completed the system. PN2863545 (left) and 2863552 (right). The Challenger T/A and the AAR Cuda were the only cars produced with a black painted exhaust system.

Hurst pistol grip, close ratio four-speed {D21) was standard with the 727 Torqueflite (D32) being optional with either floor shift or column shift.

8.25″ sure-grip (D91) with 3.55:1 (D56) standard, 3.91:1 (D57) optional. The Dana 60 was not available. The information states that the rear axle ratios were to be either 3:55 or 3:91, however many cars left the factory with 3.23 gears.

(Code 513) Heavy duty shocks {525), larger 0.95″ diameter front sway bar {531), 0.75″ diameter rear sway bar, 0.92″ torsion bars and special rear springs with a rate of 150 lbs/inch with increased arch-camber

Standard 11-inch power disc front with semi-metallic linings, 11-inch drum rear. No optional brake system available.

24:1 manual steering standard. Options available were (Code 574) fast ratio 12:1 power steering or 16:1 standard power steering (Code 577).

(Code U01) Goodyear raised white letter Polyglass GTs, E60 x 15 front, G60 x 15 rear. (These were the first cars from Detroit to have different sized front and rear tires).

15 x 7 silver Ralleye wheels (Code W21) standard.  Weight saving collapsible spare (Code W34) was a required option, it was a F78 x 14 BF Goodrich.

Black, fiberglass fresh air hood (Code N94) with hood pins (Code J45) was standard. No other hood was used. The hood springs are slightly different being smaller with less tension. Black grilles were standard on T/A’s.

Inside day/night (Code G41), and painted driver’s side, remote controlled racing mirror (Code G34) was standard. Painted manual passenger side mirror (Code G36) was optional.

Black, ABS plastic rear duck tail spoilers (Code J82) were standard. Front spoilers (Code J78) were optional, shipped in the trunk and dealer installed.

Interior options were the same as the R/T. Interior colors: Black, White, Green, Blue, Burnt Orange and Red, as well as cloth hounds tooth seats. All radio options, light package options available. All antennas (Code N94), were mounted on the right rear quarter,  the first and last time on any Chrysler Product, the Ralleye dash (Code A62) was optional.

Sheet Metal: Challenger T/As came with what is known as “15 inch fenders”. The difference between 14″ and 15″ fenders is the lip at the top of the wheel well is rolled in. All other sheet metal is the same as the standard E-body.

Paint: All acrylic enamel colors available –  same as ‘Cuda. Organasol black (Ditzler code DDL9355) was used on all hoods, taillight panels, fender tops.

Stripes: “340 Six Pack” fender decals on Challenger only

Rear window louvers (Code A67), vinyl roof limited to black (Code V1X), power windows, rear defogger, wheel lip moldings (Code M26).
