1969 Chevrolet Camaro – What’s It Worth?

1969 Chevrolet Camaro Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Chevrolet Camaro

The grille was redesigned with sharper V and deep inset headlights. New door skins, rear quarter panels, and rear valance panel made the car look both lower and wider. To increase competitiveness in the SCCA Trans-Am racing series, optional four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston calipers were made available during the year, under RPO JL8. This system used components from the Corvette and made for a major improvement in the braking capability. The option was expensive and only 206 units were produced.

The formerly smooth-sided body was now sculptured, with a side feature line tracing the forward edge of the front wheel housing and running straight from the top of the opening to the rear of the car. A second line traced the front of the rear wheel opening and blended into the main one. Simulated vertical air slots were positioned ahead of the rear wheel. The Rally Sport option offered a special black grille with concealed headlights, the retractable headlamp doors being decorated by a triple-slot design motif. A functional “Super Scoop” hood was available with Z-28 or Super Sport package. Standard equipment included the mandatory head rest option plus, heater and defroster, integrated front headlight and parking light unit, Strato-Bucket front seats, all-vinyl interior, carpeting, Astro Ventilation system, front shoulder safety belts, lefthand OSRV mirror, side marker lights, E78 x 14 two-ply (four-ply rated) black sidewall tires, 140 horsepower Six or 210 horsepower V-8 and, in convertibles, interior courtesy lights.

A GM corporate edict forbade its Divisions from installing engines larger than 400 CID in mid-size and smaller model vehicles. Requests from dealers who had been dealer-installing 427 CID engines in the Camaro prompted Chevrolet to use an ordering process usually used on fleet and special orders to offer 427 engines in the Camaro. Two Central Office Production Orders (COPO), numbers 9560 and 9561, were offered in the 1969 model year.

  • The COPO 9561 used the solid-lifter 427 CID big-block engine, option L72, formerly fitted to the 1966 Corvette, rated at 425 HP at 5600 RPM. Around 1,000 Camaros were fitted with the L72 engine option.
  • The COPO 9560 used an all-aluminum 427 CID big-block, option ZL1, and was designed specifically for drag racing. This engine replaced and improved the L88 race engine released in 1967-68. A total of 69 ZL1 Camaros were produced. The engine cost over $4,000 over price of a base V8 Camaro. Rated at 430 HP at 5200 RPM, it could produce over 500 gross with exhaust changes and tuning. The ZL1 engines were manufactured at the Tonawanda Assembly Plant before being installed in Corvettes and Camaros – or sold over the counter to racers. Each took 16 hours to be hand-assembled.

The Indianapolis Pace Car replica Camaro was also offered, with about 100 original editions built and provided as official cars for dignitaries and press personalities attending the 500 Mile Race. The real Pace Car was an RS/SS 396 convertible, but most of the rest were SS 350 versions. A Pace Car package was later marketed for the general public, on February 4, 1969 with 3,675 having what became the Z11 Indy Sport Convertible option. Also made available was a Z10 Indy Sport Coupe option, in this case with about 200-300 vehicles produced.

The 1969 model year was extended into November 1969, due to manufacturing problems that delayed the introduction of the second-generation model planned for 1970.

NOTE: The major option packages; “RS” “SS” and “Z/28” are discussed in detail below.

The COPO 9561 option used a solid-lifter L72 427 CID big-block engine, rated at 425 HP at 5600 RPM. Around 1,000 Camaros were fitted with the L72 engine option. See the specifications for this engine in the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

In addition to the base model, the Rally Sport Camaro adds to the appearance. On the exterior there are “RS” emblems on the grille and on the rear fuel filler cap, a full-width, black lattice grille with concealed headlights, lower body side molding, a black accent just below body side molding (with certain colors); color-keyed body accent stripes, special styling for parking/turning lights at the front, sports-styled backup lights, bright metal front and rear wheel opening moldings, and bright drip gutter molding on sport coupes.

In the interior, there is a “RS” emblem on the steering wheel center.

On the exterior of the SS350 there is unique color-keyed hood striping plus simulated louvers on the hood. “SS” letters are placed at the front of the front fenders and an “SS 350” emblem is in the center of the grille. At the rear, there is a “SS 350” emblem on the fuel filler cap. On the inside a “SS 350” emblem appears in the steering wheel center. SS 350 models are appropriately shod with red stripe tires.

The SS 350 was standard with the 350 CID 295 HP V-8, with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. The SS 396 model came standard with a 325 HP 396 CID V-8. Horsepower upgrades included 350 HP and 375 HP 396 CID V-8s.

NOTE:  Most COPO Camaros were not SS models but delivered as base cars.

The Z/28 option featured a high-output small-block 302 CID V-8, designed for racing in Trans-Am racing series. It had an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary 780 CFM Holley carburetor. The Z/28 came with upgraded suspension, power front disc brakes, and a 4-speed Muncie close-ratio manual transmission. Posi-traction was optional. Wide racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid could be deleted at no charge, Advertised power of the 302 was listed at 290 HP at 5300 RPM. This was under-rated to keep the horsepower rating under 1 HP per cubic inch for insurance premium calculations and racing classification.
