1969 Mid-Size Oldsmobiles –  New Grilles & Tail Lights

Oldsmobile stood pat with the styling and merely cleaned up the front fascia and grille as well as the rear where the tail lights became vertical. A new three-speed automatic transmission bowed. Most of the sales for the Olds intermediates moved to both the performance market and more luxury-equipped cars. A more aggressive-looking Hurst/Olds arrived.

1969 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Oldsmobile Mid-Size Car Facts

NOTE: Vista Cruiser was considered a special separate model line and is not covered here.

The 1969 Oldsmobile mid-size models received only minor trim changes from their ’68 counterparts with what would be an Olds trademark split grille with vertical bars and vertical taillights. Per federal safety regulations, headrests were now standard equipment and the ignition switch moved from the instrument panel to the steering column to lock the steering when not in use, one year before the locking steering columns were federally mandated.

Engine offerings were unchanged from 1968, but a new three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 transmission was added to the option list and available with all versions of the 350 CID V-8 including the W-31 option. The two-speed Jetaway automatic was still available with the 250 CID I-6 or the two-barrel 350 CID V-8. The Turnpike Cruising two-barrel 400 CIDV-8 was dropped from the 442 line and was only available only in the Vista Cruiser wagons.

Twin hood stripes were now available on the 442 to highlight the new dual-bulged hood. The “4-4-2” numerals grew in size. Optional disc brakes had updated single-piston calipers. The exhaust manifolds featured a new center divider for better performance. The W-32 option appeared.

The W-32 package was developed due to the rather highly strung W-30. The W-32 was only available with automatic transmission and was essentially a manual transmission 442 with OAI . For more info, see the 1968-1969 Oldsmobile Super Tuning Guide  HERE.

The second iteration of the Hurst/Olds was much more aggressive looking with dual hood scoops, a rear wing and white and gold paint. The engine was now offered with a bit softer camshaft that favored torque. Performance seemed unaffected. See the Hurst Industries Hurst/Olds Specifications letter HERE. Chassis and other specs can be found HERE.

The Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 was developed to replace the two-speed Super Turbine 300 and Powerglide transmissions. The 350 units were manufactured by Buick and by Chevrolet, with the Buick version used by Oldsmobile. See the specs HERE.

442 – Originally offered since mid-1964 as an option, for the second year the 442 was now a series. Three basic models were available. If a 4-4-2 buyer wanted a little more performance a special W-32 package could be ordered. It was based on a the standard 442 with forced-air , but only with automatic transmission.  The ultra-high performance W-30 was still available. Standard 4-4-2 equipment included all items from the Cutlass list plus: special grille, special stripes and emblems, bucket seats, heavy-duty drive shaft, special handling package, heavy-duty wheels and straight-through exhaust system.  Tire size was F-70 x 14 inches.

There were some other unique features: 455 CID engine with W-30 cylinder heads an all new 285/287 degree camshaft, OAI system, Hurst Dual-gate Shifter, G70 x14 tires, special white and gold paint scheme, full hood scoops, a rear wing and unique badging, inside and out.
