1962 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars Fact Sheet

1962 Plymouth Facts, Figures, and Specifications

1962 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information Data

The 1962 Plymouth line copied much of the styling from the successful 1961 Valiant.  Most significant was the two inch drop to a mid-size 116″ wheelbase. The result was a reduction of 10″ in overall length, and also shedding over 150 lbs. in weight!

Plymouth – Big Changes
for 1962

In a surprise move, Plymouth (and Dodge) reduced the wheelbase of their mid-price cars to mid-size, dropping the wheelbase from 118 inches to 116 inches and removing almost 150 pounds from the average weight of each  model!

General Year Information – 1962 Plymouth
Mid-Size Car

NOTE: The 1962 Plymouth is categorized in our Fact Sheets as a mid-size car due to its 116 inch wheelbase. While there were no full size cars in Plymouth’s lineup, Dodge and Chrysler both featured full size cars on a 122 inch wheelbase, the Dodge Custom 880 and, of course, the Chrysler Newport, 300 and 300H. The Dodge Dart and Polara will also be categorized as mid-size cars as they sit on the same 116 inch wheelbase as the Plymouth. Plymouth did not offer a full size 118-122 inch wheelbase car in 1962.

The Plymouth Valiant is a compact car and not covered in this Fact Sheet.

A New Look

As the Valiant had proved successful addition in 1961,  this year the all other Plymouth cars received a styling chance similar to the Valiant. The rear side feature line did stop short of the Valiant’s around-the-wheelhouse sweep. In fact, the back of the cars looked like the outcome of mating a Valiant rear fascia with a regular 1961 Plymouth. The low, thin center dorsal fin remained atop the rear deck. The grille was not a Valiant inspiration either. It was concave, with a series of concave, vertically-segmented fins. Dual horizontal head¬lamps were seen. The inner lenses were set into the grille and looked smaller than the outer lenses, which were positioned in large, tunneled, circular housings at each corer of the body. Roof lines were a radical departure from the past, most having wrap-around backlights and a more formal look. A long hood/short deck theme was apparent throughout the line.

Like the Valiant, the 1962 Plymouths promoted 32,000 mile intervals between chassis lubrication. The cars used printed electrical circuit boards; higher torque starters; unit-body construction and a new aluminum transmission case for the automatic transmissions.

Historical

In August, 1962 a specially equipped Plymouth attained the fastest speed ever recorded for a stock-bodied auto at this time. Running at the Annual Bonneville National Speed Trials, the car made a 190.073 miles per hour one-way run.

The Sport Fury line, last available in 1959, returned this year. While all performance engines were available across all lines, the Sport Fury came standard with bucket seats; center front console; full wheel covers; all-vinyl trim, a DeLuxe steering wheel, and a 318 CID 230 HP V-8.

The 413 CID Super Stock V-8 replaced the high output 413 and 383 CID long and short ram V-8s with 410 HP at 5400 RPM with 11.0 compression and 420 HP with 13.5:1 compression. See “Engines” below for more information or check the AMA High Performance Specifications HERE.

Savoys were the basic models, with “Plymouth” in  script high on the front doors and no extraneous trim. Standard equipment included oil filter; turn signals; sun visors; electric wipers; front arm rests; glove box lock; five tubeless blackwall tires and small hub caps. Cars known as “Fleet Specials” were basically Savoys with less standard features.

The Belvedere was Plymouth’s mid-priced, full-sized nameplate. These cars had a strip of stainless steel running, along the fender feature line, from above the headlamps to mid-door, and ending with a spear tip there. Placed above the molding, on the door, was chrome “Belvedere” in script. Standard equipment was comprised of the Savoy assortment, plus arm rests; front foam seat cushions; cigar lighter and power tailgate window on nine-passenger station wagons.

The Fury had higher-level appointments and a high-level of standard equipment over the Savoy and Belvedere. Included in standard equipment were all Belvedere items, plus aluminum exterior trim inserts (on rear door/body top edge); backup lights; electric clock and power tailgate window on nine-passenger Suburban wagons.

Also, Fury models had specially available options like all-vinyl trim in hardtops, rear foam seat cushion and Six-Way power seat. Surprisingly, wheel covers, however, were optional – not standard.  “Fury” in script, identified the model, and was placed behind the front wheel opening. The front fender feature line was highlighted with a heavy chrome strip, which was fluted at the forward tip. Thin moldings outlined the front and rear wheel openings, too. Only two styles, a sedan and a two-door hardtop ‘sedan’, were sold with the slant six engine.

Announced about four months after the rest of the line, a revived Sport Fury line became Plymouth’s premium offering. It had such extras as bucket seats; center front console; full wheel covers; all-vinyl trim; rear foam seat cushions and a DeLuxe steering wheel as standard equipment.

As the initial run of 1961 Plymouths looked quite plain. In response to dealer wishes, several styling touches  were added to all Furys and Sport Furys in mid-run. These included a third tail lamp on each side (for a total of six); belt line trim extensions were now full-length, and license plate recess was now trimmed in stainless.

Sport Furys, were distinguished by their name in script – placed ahead of front wheel opening; deck lid license plates and red, white and blue finished trim insert dimples. The grille was given a more strongly segmented appearance, by blacking-out the wider division panels. The Sport Fury came as a two-door hardtop “sedan” or convertible, but special engines were optional. Only V-8s were fitted to Sport Fury models.
