1963 Mercury Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1963 Mercury Full Size Car

Monterey
For 1963, Mercury full size models (all called “Monterey”) underwent a revision to their roofline, reintroducing the retractable rear window used by the 1957-1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. While it used the reverse-slant design, the power-window mechanism was borrowed from the station wagon line. Again named “Breezeway”, the retractable rear window was standard on all non-convertible Monterey and S-55 models. The front grille adopted a sharply-divided concave design, with the six-lens taillamp rear fascia making a return.

The powertrain line underwent a similar revision, as the 223 six and 292 and 352 V8s were dropped, with the 390 CID 250 HP 2-barrel V-8 becoming the standard engine. A 4-barrel 300 HP 390 was offered, initially along with a 330 HP solid lifter “Police” option. The  385 HP and 405 HP versions of the 406 CID V-8 were offered initially as the performance options. In a running change during mid-year 1963, the 406 CID V-8 was replaced by the famous 427 CID V-8, with 410 hp and 425 hp outputs.

Marauder
Mercury introduced the Mercury Marauder as a 1963 1/2 model. It introduced the fastback roof line in full size Mercurys. Like full size Fords and to better compete in racing, Mercury mated the body with the roofline of the Ford Galaxie hardtop. The Marauder came in three trim levels – Monterey and Monterey Custom with bench seat and S-55 version with bucket seats. The Monterey/Monterey Custom version received the 390 2-barrel 250 HP V-8 with standard 3-speed transmission, with other transmissions and engines optional.  The Marauder S-55 received the 390 CID 4-bareel 300 HP V-8 as standard with either 4-speed or 3-speed automatic transmission. Also optional were all the 427 CID V-8s.

Concurrent with the release of the Marauder was the “Marauder” and “Super Marauder” 427 CID V-8 engines delivering 410 and 425 HP.  These replaced the 406 CID High Performance V-8s. These engines were available in all 2-door full size Mercurys.

S-55
For 1963, the S-55 model line was expanded to include four-door hardtops. All S-55 models were bucket seat and console equipped. The previous notchback roofline was discontinued and replaced with the “Breezeway” design whether 2- or 4-door versions – all featured the reverse-slant retractable rear window.

NOTE: Early high performance full size Mercury models were equipped with the 406 CID V-8 in the 1962 configuration. Mid-year, the famous 427 CID V-8 line was released. For more information 1963 406 and 427 CID high performance engines, see the 1963 Ford High Performance AMA Specification Sheets  on the  HERE.

The fastback roof line “Marauder” hardtop was released mid-year. While definitely sporty, it was primarily developed to assist Mercurys in NASCAR’s high speed ovals, where their cars had been at a distinct disadvantage in 1962. The Marauder was the fastback roof style only. It came in all trim levels – Monterey/Monterey Custom with bench seat and S-55 with bucket seats. The Monterey/Monterey Custom version received the 390 2-barrel 250 HP V-8 with standard 3-speed transmission, with other transmissions and engines optional.  The Marauder S-55 received the 390 CID 4-bareel 300 HP V-8 as standard with either 4-speed or 3-speed automatic transmission

Monterey – Basic Monterey styling seemed more in tune with the 1961 models than the 1962s. Six taillights were (as in 1961) located in the rear deck panel. Side body moldings ran from the tailfins to the headlights. Chrome trim was on the roof quarter panels. A concave, vertical bar grille housing four chrome-rimmed headlights.

Models available were  2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop and 4- door Hardtop, and 2-door Fastback Hardtop.

Monterey Custom – Tire-level full-length moldings, three rectangular chrome pieces on the rear fender and front fender nameplates distinguished the Custom from the standard Monterey. All Customs came equipped electric clock and two-speed windshield wipers.

Models available were  4-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop and 4- door Hardtop, 2-door Fastback Hardtop and Convertible.

Monterey S-55/Marauder – The S-55 insignia in front of the rear fender chrome bars and special wheel covers were the most noticeable exterior differences between the S-55 and the Custom. When the Marauder appeared, the “Marauder” insignia appeared in place of “S-55”. Inside, the S-55 featured vinyl upholstery, front bucket seats with the center console, front and rear armrests and padded dash. Buyers could have an automatic or a four-speed manual transmission at no extra cost.

The Marauder was the fastback roof style only. It came in all trim levels – Monterey/Monterey Custom with bench seat and S-55 with bucket seats. The Monterey and Monterey Custom version received the 390 2-barrel 250 HP V-8 with standard 3-speed transmission, with other transmissions and engines optional.  The Marauder S-55 version received the 390 CID 4-bareel 300 HP V-8 as standard with either 4-speed or 3-speed automatic transmission.

Models available were the 2-door Hardtop, 2-door Fastback Hardtop (Marauder), 4-door Hardtop, and Convertible.

Station Wagons –  All versions of the Mercury station wagon were called “Colony Park”. All versions featured faux wood trim and Mercury Custom exterior-like trim and their own interior trim, though it emulated Monterey Custom and S-55 in level  and quality. Each version differed only in interior seating. Models were available in S-55 trim in 5- and 8-passenger seating and standard trim in 6- and 9-passenger seating.
