For 1960 – New Bodies, New Styling & Much More Horsepower

Fords were totally redesigned from the ground up for 1960. They shared nothing with the previous models except engines and drive lines. The 1960 styling  remains one of the smoothest designs ever to come from Ford’s drawing boards. The new models were longer, lower and wider than their predecessors. The year is also noted for the return of high performance V-8s at Ford, with the 360 HP version considered to be the Father of the famous 427.

1960 Ford Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1962 Ford Full Size Car

The full size Ford grew more this year, now riding on a 119 inch wheelbase. The engines were carried over from the 1959 Ford, as was the basic chassis design, but the sheetmetal was more modern. The retracting Skyliner hardtop was gone, though the Sunliner convertible remained, and the Fairlane name would last only two years before migrating to the new midsize model.

The car looked all-new with twin headlights riding in a scalloped-square front clip. The Fairlane nameplate was now the base model, along with the Fairlane 500, Galaxie and range-topping Galaxie Special that included the Starliner hardtop and the Sunliner convertible. The Station Wagon Series continued with Ranch Wagon, Country Sedan and Country Squire models, with the latter also becoming part of the Galaxie Special line.

The 1960 full size Fords abandoned the ostentatious ornamentation of the 1950s for a futuristic, sleek look. Round taillights were replaced by half-moon shaped taillights for 1960 only. The focus of Ford’s stylists was to abandon the aviation influences of the “Jet Age” of the previous decade and instead capture the obsession of what would later be called the “Space Race”. The Galaxie nameplate worked well with this trend, as it would turn out. With the change in dimensions from 1959, the New York Times described the 1960 full-size Ford as the “longest, lowest, and widest in the fifty-six year history of the Ford Motor Company.”

All 1960 Fords featured a single chrome strip from the top of the front bumper, sweeping up to the top of the front fender, then back, along the belt line to the back of the car, where it turned inward and capped a small horizontal (versus vertical) fin. Large long taillights were housed in an aluminum panel below the fins and directly above a large bumper. At the front end, a large, recessed mesh grille housed the dual headlights. Each line added more ornamentation as they moved up the luxury-level. (See Models Descried for more information).

Changes were deeper than Just styling alone. For example, windshield wipers were extended to cover more of the windshield, and the center rear fuel door lid was introduced. The dashboard received a significant upgrade – with its width stretching further across the car. Engines offered were the 223 CID I-6 and 292 & 352 CID V-8s. A mid-year engine introduction was the Hi-Po 352 CID V-8 with 360 HP. This was Ford’s first engine with over 1 HP per cubic inch displacement. With the first real racing engine since 1957, the elegant Starliner 2-door hardtop became Ford’s choice for NASCAR racing due to its sweeping backlight that allowed faster speeds.

While always considered to be an exciting model, the retractable Skyliner hardtop was dropped, nit due to sales, which were good for such an expensive and unique model, but due to the service issues more than anything else. When the 1960 model was designed, the space given to the mechanism was not considered, so the car quietly disappeared.

The 352 CID V-8 FE block arrived and put Ford back in racing after a 3-year absence. Horsepower rose from the standard 352 CID V-8s 300 to 360 HP.  It was designed from the ground up as a race engine with stronger internals, a special aluminum intake, a performance Holley carburetor,  and a much hotter camshaft. You can see all the specs in the 1960 Ford High Performance AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

The new Ford grew one inch in wheelbase and 5 inches in length. Width went up from 76.6 inches to an astounding 81.5! This would establish the Ford platform for many years to come.

The Fairlane series was the base trim level for 1960 and included chrome moldings around windshield and rear windows, two sun visors, arm rests on all doors and no extra chrome side trim. The Fairlane series was distinguished by  the word “Ford” spaced along the recessed section of the full-width hood and used four cast stripes along the rear quarter panel for trim. “Fairlane” in script was on the sides of the front fenders.

Fairlane models were the 4-door Sedan, 2-door Sedan, and the 2-door Business Coupe.

The Fairlane 500 was the intermediate trim level and included all the Fairlane trim, plus four chrome stripes on the rear fenders and the Fairlane crest on the hood. Interiors were upgraded from the base Fairlane. Fairlane 500 models were the 4-door town sedan and the 2-door Club Sedan.

The Galaxie series were the top trim level for 1960 and included chrome A pillar moldings, chrome window moldings, horizontal chrome strip on the side of the body, ribbed aluminum stone shields behind the rear wheels, “Galaxie” in script on the front fenders and trunk lid as well as the Ford crest on the hood.

Galaxie models were 4-door Town Sedan, 2-door Club Sedan, and 4-door Town Victoria Hardtop Sedan.

The Galaxie Special series were the top trim level for 1960 and included chrome, chrome window moldings, horizontal chrome strip on the side of the body, ribbed aluminum stone shields behind the rear wheels, “Galaxie” in script on the front fenders and trunk lid as well as the Ford crest on the hood. The Galaxie Special series included only the Starliner and Sunliner with the highest-level trim, and the “Galaxie” on the trunk lid was replaced with either “Sunliner” or “Starliner” in script.

Galaxie Special models were the Starliner 2-door hardtop, and the Sunliner convertible.

The Ranch Wagon was the base trim level station wagon, Country Sedans were the intermediate level of equipment and Country Squires were the top trim level. The level of equipment paralleled Fairlane, Fairlane 500 and Galaxie models of conventional cars.
