1965 Pontiac Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1965 Pontiac
The 1965 full-sized Pontiacs were completely restyled with more flowing sheetmetal featuring “Coke-bottle” profiles and fastback rooflines on two-door hardtops. Styling changes included larger bodies with twin air-slot grilles. Vertically stacked headlights continued but were contained in barrel-shaped enclosures, which were visored by cut-back front fenders. Hoods were V-shaped with a prominent center bulge. Side glass was curved and there were symmetrical venturi-like contours and fin shaped creases running along the lower rearward lower body sides. Inside, the instrument panel was revised along with interior trim. Wheelbases increased to 121.0″ on Catalina, 2 + 2, Grand Prix, all Safari station wagons, and 124″ on Star Chief and Bonneville.
Full-Size Pontiacs for the 1965 were now available with GM’s three-speed Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission. This new unit replaced the older three-speed, four-range Roto-Hydramtic, as well as the four-speed Super-Hydramatic. . The TH-400 also changed the shift pattern from the “P-N-D-S-L-R” to the safer and more modern “P-R-N-D-S-L.”
For the most part, running gear and powertrain options remained the same. With the exception of the 2 + 2 in the Catalina line, the line distention was clear: Catalina was the entry Pontiac, with Star Chief as the mid-line sedan, Bonneville remained as the luxury line, but now Grand Prix was moved closer to the space occupied by Ford’s Thunderbird to compete for a share of the sports luxury market. To support this distinction, the 2 + 2 option changed from a trim package to an all-out performance car package similar to the mid-sized GTO. The base engine with the 2 + 2 was now the 338 HP 421 CID four-barrel. The 353 HP Tri-Power and 376 HP 421 CID “HO” engines were available options.

The second generation Grand Prix was restyled to appear more luxurious, including a a tweak that signaled the move to sports luxury, rear fender skirts. The base engine was literally the same as previous years but upgraded to provide 333 HP when equipped with manual transmission. The Grand Prix also had a more formal roof line – an exclusive squared-off design with concave rear window, while other coupes showed a semi-fastback design.
Horsepower on the 421 CID V-8 engines was up – due for the most part to better cylinder heads. The HO engine now delivered 376 HP and 461 ft. lbs. of torque.

Pontiac dropped the “Trophy” name for the V-8s in the 1965 model year however it was the year that the car was fitted with a unique engine called “421 CID “2+2 V-8”. Standard 2+2 features included heavy-duty springs and shock absorbers, a 3-speed synchromesh manual transmission. A 4-speed manual unit with a Hurst shifter was optional. Also fitted were dual exhausts and a performance axle ratio of 3.42:1. The new Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission replaced the older Hydramatic.

All features found in Catalinas were standard equipment. Additionally, deluxe wheel discs and steering wheel, electric clock, dual-speed wipers and special upholstery were part of this model line.
Body styles available were the 4-door sedan and the 4-door hardtop sedan.
Bonneville Series 262 – Bonneville identification included “Bonneville” lettering on the left-hand side of the hood and on the rear fenders, elongated V-shaped badges behind front wheel cutouts, and wide stainless steel accent panels along the lower body under the fin-shaped crease. Bonneville models had rear fender skirts.
Standard equipment was everything found on Star Chief plus padded instrument panel, front and rear arm rests, padded assist grip, courtesy lamps and cloth and vinyl upholstery combinations. Grand Prix – Series 266 – The Grand Prix hardtop sports coupe was the most distinctive of all 1965 full-sized Pontiacs. It had an air slot grille with a unique, vertically divided, aluminized Insert which incorporated rectangular parking lamps. The fin-shaped creases along the lower body were trimmed with a wide stainless steel molding. The letters “GP” were placed on the left-hand lip of the hood, and “Grand Prix” was placed on the front fenders behind the wheel opening. A “GP” badge was placed on the sides of the rear fenders. For the first time, the Grand Prix had rear fender skirts.
Standard equipment included all features found on Bonneville plus monotone Morrokide upholstery and a glove box lamp was also included. Now buyers had a choice of special front bench seat or bucket seats with a console and tachometer.
The Grand Prix came in its own special 2-door hardtop body style, #26657.
