1969 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars

Some new models added
The optional flowered vinyl roof – and matching “Mod” interior – were available for the Satellite and most other  two-door hardtops, including the GTX and Road Runner.

GTX
The GTX model’s sales dropped in 1969 when the Road Runner was also offered in a convertible. The GTX received minor cosmetic changes to the tail lights and grille, as well as the side marker lights. An optional “Air Grabber” hood that was standard on Hemi-engined cars was added. It featured functional openings on both sides of the hood pulled in outside air. The air vents were controlled from the dashboard.

The GTX exterior had black lower-body side paint in place of the previous stripes. The standard V-8 was still the 440 CID unit, rated at the same 375 HP. This would be the last year that the convertible was available on the GTX. With the competition from the Road Runner the total GTX convertible was only 701 – of those, eleven were equipped with the 426 Hemi.

Road Runner
The 1969 model kept the same basic look, but also with slight changes to the taillights, grille, side marker lights, optional bucket seats, and the Road Runner decals were new. A convertible was added for 1969 with 2,128 produced that year. 2,118 were 383 CID V-8 equipped and 10 were equipped with the 426 CID Hemi. The Plymouth Road Runner was named Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1969. Production for the three body styles was 81,125 with an another 3,295 in Canada and other countries.

Sport Satellite
The Sport Satellite, moved upscale from the Satellite and added ‘B’ pillar and wheel opening moldings, accent striping, front foam seats, (on convertible) bucket seats; (on sedan) chrome door frames

Satellite
A Sport Satellite four-door sedan was added to the lineup in 1969, and the wagons became a part of the regular Sport Satellite line.

Belvedere
The Belvedere was available as a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and 6-passenger station wagon. The Belvedere received minor cosmetic changes to the tail lights and grille, as well as the side marker lights much like the Satellite.

The N96 code Air Grabber option was introduced this year. The assembly sent outside air directly into the engine. It consisted of a fiberglass air duct assembly bolted to the underside of the hood that connected to twin rectangular upward-facing vents in the hood. These then had Rallye red vent screens. The fiberglass hood box had an “Air Grabber” sticker on the front. When the hood was closed, a rubber seal fitted over the large-oval unsilenced air cleaner. A decal pictured Wile E. Coyote saying “Coyote Duster” was placed on the air cleaner lid. The vents in the hood could be opened and closed via a lever under the dashboard labeled “Carb Air.”

The Road Runner (A12) 440-6 engine option with Three 2 barrel Holley carburetors was added to the lineup at mid-year. The A12 was a distinct package – it had no wheel covers or hubcaps, only the 15×6″ “H” stamped steel black wheels with chrome lug nuts. It featured a black fiberglass lift-off hood with 4 hood pins and a large functional hood scoop with a red sticker on each side saying “440 6BBL”. The scoop sealed to the large air breather. All cars had a Dana 60 rear axle with a 4.10:1 gear ratio. Production of the 440 6-BBL A12 option Road Runner was approximately 1,432. The A12 option had an “M” as the fifth character in the VIN. It was rated at 390 HP @ 4,700 RPM and 490 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3200 RPM.
