1970 – Subtle Changes Improve the Looks
Hidden headlights were deleted in favor of four exposed round headlamps outboard of narrower grille openings. The nose still had a protruding vertical prow theme, although it was less prominent. While the standard Tempest and LeMans had chrome grilles, the GTO retained the Endura urethane cover around the headlamps and grille. The Judge package remained available as an option on the GTO. Again, the Judge came standard with the “Ram Air 400” V-8 while the Ram Air IV was optional.

General Year Information – 1970 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars
Styling Changes
The entire mid-size model line received another facelift for the 1970 model year with hidden headlights deleted in favor of exposed round headlamps outboard of a set of narrower grille openings. The nose retained the protruding vertical prow theme. While the standard Tempest and LeMans had chrome grilles, the GTO retained the Endura urethane cover around the headlamps and grille.
Model Names Revamped
LeMans, as a nameplate was now used on the mid-priced Tempests, formerly called “Custom S” models. The top level Tempest line was now called “LeMans Sport”. The GTO utilized Tempest sheetmetal combined once again, with the Endura front fascia. Initially, the line was down to just two- and four-door sedans but expanded at mid-year with the introduction of the low-priced T-37 hardtop coupe.
Suspension Upgrades
The GTO suspension was upgraded with the addition of a rear anti-roll bar, essentially the same bar as developed by Oldsmobile for the 442 in 1964 and later added to the Buick Gran Sport. The front anti-roll bar was slightly stiffer.
OHC I-6 Gone
Significant was the end of production of the OHC I-6 engine. It was replaced with the Chevrolet pushrod version of the engine in the same displacement and delivering 155 HP only.

A new option was the 455 HO, a long-stroke engine rated by Pontiac at 360 HP. The camshaft used in the Ram Air 400 and the GTO 455 HO were the same. Bore and stroke: 4.1251″ x 4.210″. Compression ratio: 10.75:1. Horsepower: 360 @ 4600 RPM. Torque: 500 @ 3100 RPM. Its advantage was torque – 500 vs. 445. See a comparison of GTOs – 455 vs 400 HERE.
