1971 Dodge Dart-Demon Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1971 Dodge Dart-Demon
The Swinger 340, Dart’s performance model, was augmented by the Demon 340, featuring the 275 HP 340 CID V-8, available with an optional 4-speed manual transmission, optional hood scoops, and blackout hood treatment.
Dart
The 1971 Dart received new smaller quad taillamps that would be used through 1973. The custom 2-door hardtop coupe became the Swinger, and the standard Swinger became the Swinger Special. Given only slight grille and trim restyling for 1971, the Dart sedan and hardtop continued as popular Dodge products. The Singer 340 was replaced by the Demon 340 in the US. Canada produced 83 special order Swinger 340s for their market. The 318 ID V-8 was the only V-8 offered.
Demon
A new coupe version of the Dart, utilizing Plymouth’s Duster body, was also introduced. Dubbed the Demon, this model rode on a chassis with a three inch shorter wheelbase and overall length was reduced by about four inches. The Demon was essentially a Plymouth Duster with Dart front sheet metal and other minor styling changes. The Demon was the base ”’value package” version of the Dart Series. The Demon 340, with the 340 CID V-8 featured optional hood scoops and blackout hood treatment, the car was advertised as a performance car.
A few US dealers swapped out the 275 HP 340 CID V-8 for a “crate” T/A 6-Pack 340. Grand Spaulding Dodge was notable for this conversion.
New
A new audio option became available for 1971: Chrysler’s cassette-recorder. Unlike the 8-track tapes, the cassette player was relatively compact, and it was mounted on the console or on its own floor-mount casing. This unit offered an available microphone in which one could record their own dictation. This year, Chrysler ended their longstanding corporate practice of installing left-hand-threaded wheel studs on the left side of the vehicle; all-wheel studs on the Dart henceforth used conventional right-hand threads.
Historical
in an effort to boost Demon sales, Dodge released a special appearance package mid-year, called the “Sizzler”. Aside from selected options and special striping, it was a V-8 Demon, not a Demon 340.
