1963 Oldsmobile Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1963 Oldsmobile
All full-sized Oldsmobiles underwent extensive body and trim revisions for 1963. Most of the underlying basic body structure and rooflines were carried over from 1962 but new exterior sheet metal abandoned the previous years’ sculpted mid-sections with sharper edges being employed overall. 1963 also brought about GM’s across-the-board adoption of the straight angled windshield “A” pillar on all full-size production vehicles, eliminating the unusual 1961 through 1962 reverse-curve treatment. Options that year included a “tilt-away” steering wheel that could be adjusted to six positions, six-way power seats, AM/FM radio, Delcotron alternators for all models, and cruise control. Different rear quarter panels meant Oldsmobile 88s and the more expensive 98s were more differentiated than before. Starfire still had different side trim and a unique rear roofline and “C” pillar on Coupes.
98
Again, in 1963, the top-of-the-line Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight had an exclusive 126.0 inch wheelbase. An unusual and new body style was the Custom Sport Coupe hardtop. It was the only body style in the 98 line that offered the 345 horsepower Starfire engine and the Starfire’s bucket seat interior. This car also received its own body style number – 3947. The 4-door 6-window hardtop was renamed the Luxury Sedan. Ninety-Eights were now made only in Lansing, Linden, Kansas City, Southgate and Wilmington. Six models were offered, a 2-door hardtop, two 4-door hardtop sedans, a 4-door sedan, a convertible, and the new Custom Sports Coupe. Surpringly, the new Custom Sport Coupe outsold the standard 2-door hardtop by almost 2-to-1.
Starfire
The Starfire returned on the shorter 123.0 inch wheelbase. It also gained an exclusive razor-edged roof treatment utilizing a concave backlight similar to that of the new Pontiac Grand Prix. Sales of the coupe dropped to 21,489 and the convertible was down to 4,401, a loss of 38%.
Super 88
As usual, the 330 HP Sky Rocket engine, from the Ninety-Eight Series, was under the hood, otherwise interiors were slightly upscale from the Dynamic 88. Only 4 models were available, 2-door hardtop, 4-door hardtop, 4-door sedan and Station wagon. To avoid competition with the Starfire, the Super 88 performance line did not offer a convertible.
Dynamic 88
Again, on the lowest rung of the ladder was the Dynamic Eight-Eight Series. A total of six different models were available, including a convertible and 2 different station wagons.

In an unusual move that seemed to pay off, a Custom Sport Coupe was launched in the line, adding the Starfire interior to the 98 2-door hardtop along with the Starfire’s 345 HP 394 CID V-8. The hunch paid off to the tune of 7,422 units sold.

The Starfire received an exclusive razor-edged roof treatment with a concave backlight similar to that of the new Pontiac Grand Prix. It was quite different from the 88 and 98 series coupe rooflines.

The Dynamic 88 2-barrel carburetor engine stayed at 280 HP, and the Super 88/98 and Starfire powerplants also leveled out at 330 HP and the Starfire engine was still 345 HP. The Starfire engine was also standard in the 98 Custom Sport Coupe.
For Oldsmobile’s full size line, a 4-range, 3-speed Hydra-Matic was offered. Nicknamed “Slim Jim” by many, it was an attempt to reduce size and cost over the older and solid 4-Speed hydra-Matic. Unfortunately, the transmission suffered from overheating and other maladies and was soon replaced by the new Turbo 400 3-speed Hydramatic by 1965.
