1958 Dodge Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1958 Dodge
NOTE: All Dodge hardtops and convertibles have the name “Lancer” attached to their model name. A Custom Royal 2-door hardtop is named “Custom Royal Lancer”, while the 4-door sedan is just “Custom Royal”.
The 1958 Dodge models continued to use the 1957 body shell with only very minor restyling. The noticeable change was a completely revised grille and quad headlights. The grille had abbreviated horizontal center bars, which housed the parking lights at their inside edge. The true Dodge Hemi performance engine was retired in favor of the Corporate “B” Series V-8 that at Dodge was set at 361 CID. An electronically fuel-injected version of this 361 CID Wedge V-8 developed 333 horsepower. Between those engines and the base engines was a new 350 CID B Series wedge shared with Plymouth. Base power in the line came from the 230 CID L-head I-6 or the Dodge-based 325 CID V-8, still with Polyspherical heads.
The Great Recession struck the auto industry really hard in 1958, and Dodge was impacted in a large measure. Production was down about 50% of the previous year.
D-500
The D-500 remained as the performance Dodge. It was fitted with the new 361 CID wedge V-8 with three ratings: 305 HP with single 4-narrel carburetor as the standard engine. Two optional engines were available: a 361 with dual 4-barrel carburetors, and an electronic fuel injection unit with 333 HP. Surprisingly, the 305 and 320 HP engines were optional on all Dodge models, whereas the 333 HP EFI unit was excluded from wagons. In real life only the D-500 seemed to be fitted with the EFI engine. All 333 HP engines were recalled due to service and radio interference issues and replaced with dual 4-barrel units. You can learn about the Electronic Fuel Injection (Bendix “Electrojector”) unit HERE.
Model Lines
The line was now broken down into Coronet, Coronet Custom, Royal, and Custom Royal, with Suburban, Sierra, and Custom Sierra wagons. The D-500 sat alone as a performance package.
Historical
On a model year basis, 96.4 percent of all Dodges had automatic transmission, 62.5 percent had power steering, 34 percent had power brakes, 2.5 percent had power windows, 44.7 percent had radios, 23.4 percent had tinted glass, 4.4 percent had air conditioning, and 7.2 percent had dual exhaust. The Regal Lancer was a limited edition two-door hardtop with special paint. It came in bronze finish only, combined with either black or white inserts. Approximately 12 Dodge D-500 equipped models were built with the new Bendix “Electrojector” electronic fuel injection system.

- New 361 CID “B” Series Wedge is the Performance V-8
- Dual Headlights are New
- Electronic Fuel Injection is Offered
For all corporate models except Chrysler and Imperial, the existing Hemi and Poly V-8 were to be abandoned, replaced with the new “B” Series wedge head engines. Dodge would receive the 350 CID version for non-performance use, and the 361 CID would be offered in 305, 320, and 333 HP versions.
While the front fascia of the 1958 Dodge was slightly changed in 1958, the big news was that the headlights would now be dual units, with the inner light a hi-beam, replacing the parking lamp.
The Bendix “Electrojector” electronic fuel injection system was offered in 1958. Essentially what was later called computer controlled “speed density”, it was way ahead of its time but teething and service problems caused it to be recalled. Learn about the Electronic Fuel Injection unit HERE.

Coronet/Coronet Custom – The Coronet was called “Standard” when I-6 equipped, and “Custom” when V-8 equipped. The Coronet was the base trim level for 1958 and included chrome windshield and rear window moldings, chrome trim around the grille opening and headlights, a single chrome strip along the body side and the base of the rear fender fins, and “Coronet”, in script, was placed along the back of the side chrome strip. “Dodge”, in block letters, was spaced along the front edge of the hood.
Coronet models were: 4-door Sedan, 2-door Sedan, 4-door Lancer Hardtop, 2-door Lancer Hardtop, and Convertible.
Royal – The Royal was the intermediate trim level and included all the Coronet features. The chrome trim at the base of the rear fender fin flared out to a pointed “dip”, before angling up to the top of the fin. It also featured twin chrome hood ornaments as another distinction.

D-500 – The the D-500 Performance Package was available on all V-8 equipped models, in three HP versions, 305, 320, and 333. Exact production records for the 1958 Dodge D-500 are not known, though it is generally agreed that about 500 were produced.
Station Wagons – Station wagons continued to be in their own series. As in 1957, the two-door Suburban was the base trim level and com pared to the Coronet Series of conventional cars. The Sierra was the intermediate trim level and compared to the Royal model of conventional cars. The Custom Sierra was the top trim level and compared to the Custom Royal Series of conventional cars.
Wagons were: 2-door Suburban 6-passenger, 4-door Sierra 6-passenger, 4-door Sierra 9-passenger, 4-door Custom Sierra 6-passenger, and 4-door Custom Sierra 9-passenger.
