1959 Ford Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1959 Ford Cars
The 1959 Ford range was introduced in late 1958 with the Fairlane 500 as the top trim level. During the 1959 model year, the Galaxie was added to the range as an additional trim level, assuming the top position from the Fairlane 500. Galaxie stylists adapted the roof line of the Thunderbird to the standard Fairlane 500 body producing a new and formal look. The Fairlane 500 and Fairlane lines remained, but the 500 line now only feature 4 body styles. The Custom 300 was the lowest rung on the ladder, but all 1959 Fords used the 118 inch wheelbase.
The Galaxie was offered with the same sedan and hardtop body styles as the Fairlane 500 while the Sunliner and Skyliner convertibles were moved from the Fairlane 500 range to the new Galaxie. Galaxie Styling varied from the Fairlane 500 with the addition of a Ford Thunderbird-style roof line on all but the Sunliner that had received this look in 1957. Although a separate series from the Fairlane 500, 1959 Galaxie models carried both Fairlane 500 and Galaxie badging.
Ford advertised “safety anchorage” for the front seats. The parking brake was now pedal actuated. Seat belts, a padded dashboard, and child-proof rear door locks were optional, while a deep-dished steering wheel and double-door locks were standard. The air ride option was dropped.
The previous year’s 352 CID V-8, still developing 300 HP was the top line engine and the 332 remained, but only as the 225 HP two-barrel carburetor version. The 292 CID “Y-block v-8 was the entry-level V-8 and the I-6 was for the economy minded buyer.

The FE big block line was reduced at the 332 CID level, with only the 245 HP two-barrel engine retained. The 352 CID engine was unchanged, and the 361 CID “Police” engine dropped.
In 1959, Ford vehicles used a two-step base coat/clear coat paint system, with the base coat providing the color and the clear coat adding protection and shine.
Fewer than 200 cars were ever equipped with it in 1958, and it was also prone to failure. It was withdrawn mid-year 1958 and never saw the light of day afterwards.

For 1959, Ford revised the dashboard from what had been used in 1957-58. It was much more plain, but some said more easily readable.
