1956 Plymouth Mid-Size Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1956 Plymouth

For 1956, Plymouth styling was an evolution of 1955 models, however there was a more dramatic rear-end treatment highlighted by a pair of rakish tail fins, in what Virgil Exner described as the “Forward Look”. A new grille with a grid pattern center piece, decorated with a gold, V-shaped emblem on V-8 powered cars. Full-length taillights now extended from the tip of the rear fins to the backup lamp housing. “Plymouth” in block lettering was placed across the edge of the hood. A wide, jet airplane type hood ornament was used. A new four-door pillarless hardtop was introduced in the Belvedere line – called the “Sport Sedan”. In early 1956, the Fury model joined the Belvedere line as a special high-performance model.

The options were the 180 HP 270 CID V-8, 187 and 200 HP 277 CID V-8s, and for the Fury, a 240 HP 303 CID V-8.

Belvedere remained the top full-line series , with in descending order, Savoy and Plaza. Buyers could also dress-up the exterior of Savoy models and Plaza models with the optional “Sport Tone” molding treatment.
