1964 – The 4-Speed is Back!
Missing since 1960, the 4-speed manual transmission returned on the 300K. Only minor trim changes were made, mostly due to the new bodies that would be arriving in 1965. 300K production was the best total sales ever, in response to prices reduced by about $1,000, by making some previous letter series standard features now optional.

General Year Information – 1964 Chrysler Facts
Chrysler Newport
A minor facelift was done for 1964. The grille now had bright work with an emblem centered on each of three cross bars. Body side trim was wider with a gentle thickening towards the rear. Tail lamps were still located at the extreme side of the rear end, but were rectangular in nature, versus the round 1963 housings. Station wagons continued to use the four-door pillarless body style introduced in 1960.
Chrysler 300
The series dropped the “Sport” designation and was now just “300”. The silver anodized side trim was unique to the 300. Changes to the tail lights mimicked the Newport. At Spring, a special 300 was introduced. It included a silver exterior finish and black vinyl roof with black leather/vinyl interior. A star-shaped insignia that matched the style of the grille insert used on all 300s was placed at the C-pillar on hardtops and the rear part of the front fender on convertibles.
The remainder of the line continued with the convertible, the 2- and 4- door hardtop models as in 1963. Engine choices were limited to the 305 HP 383 CID and the360 HP 413 CID V-8.
Chrysler 300 Letter Series
The convertible returned for the 1964 300K, but the “cross-ram” engine now was an extra-cost option but unlike earlier years, available on the 300K only. A 413 CID Wedge with a single Carter AFB 3614S 4-barrel carburetor, a standard intake manifold, was the new standard engine at 360, it shared with the standard 300, where it was an option. Leather upholstery was no longer standard; it was now a $94 option. The list of available exterior colors expanded with contrasting interior color choices in vinyl. A mid-year special trim package was the 300K Silver Edition available only as a 2-door hardtop in Silver Mist metallic paint. It also had a vinyl half-roof that gave a Targa top appearance with a reclining passenger bucket seat. The bucket seats in all cars were redesigned with the result being a thicker, more substantial look.
Previous generations had established the Letter Series as an expensive alternative to the 300 Sport Series, but for ’64 they reduced the baseline price of the 300K by over a thousand dollars while removing many of the performance options and making other previously standard features optional. Now the coupe available at $4,228 and the convertible at $4,694. Sales responded with the largest total ever; 3,022 coupes and 625 convertibles. A unique center console was standard and distinguished it from the 300 Sport Series coupe. The Torqueflite push button controls that were installed to the left of the steering wheel were removed and instead a console mounted transmission selector was introduced, while a 4-speed manual transmission was also available.
On the exterior only minor changes were made with a visual distinction that can be made between the years was the rear tail lights; the 300J has round units while the 300K has trapezoid shaped units. The colors available were increased with Formal Black, Wedgwood Blue, Nassau Blue metallic, Monarch Blue metallic, Pine Mist metallic, Sequoia Green metallic, Silver Turquoise metallic, Royal Turquoise metallic, Madison Grey, Rosewood metallic, Royal Ruby metallic, Roman Red, Embassy Gold, Persian White, Dune Beige, Sable Tan metallic, and Silver Mist metallic available.
Chrysler New Yorker
The New Yorker facelift paralleled changes seen throughout the 1964 Chrysler lineup. The egg-crate grille halves were dropped, and a very fine horizontal bar assembly was now used. The New Yorker Town and Country station wagon used the same side trim as the Newport Town and Country wagons. The New Yorker Salon returned with its base price making it the most expensive regular Chrysler model of the year. It had every available option, except dual unit air conditioning, adjustable steering wheel, Sure Grip differential and leather trim, all of which could be ordered.
On the exterior, the New Yorker script was placed low on the rear portion of the front fender, except on the Salon, where “Salon” in script was set slightly higher on the fender.
Historical Notes
This was the last year for the optional availability of the cross-ram induction V-8. Chrysler sales rebounded by eleven percent, although the division remained the 11th ranked American automaker.

For the first time since the Letter Series was introduced, leather seating became a $92 option. The intent was to bring the 300K’s price down closer to the regular 300. Many other standard features were also made optional. It succeeded, with the 300K sales as the best ever, with 3,647 sold.

While all other Chrysler products moved on to the 426 CID in various configurations, the 300K team stuck with the 413 CID unit with short tube cross-rams and a pretty hefty mechanical camshaft. Next year, the 300L would make do with a standard single 4-barrel carburetor and a performance camshaft.

In an effort to boost the 300 Model’s sales a special “300 Silver Edition” model was introduced in the Spring. It worked – adding about 2,000 units to the model’s production.

For the first time since the 1960 Chrysler 300F, the 4-speed manual transmission was offered in the 300K. When coupled with the now optional 390 HP 413, the 300K was a stormer!

CHRYSLER 300K SERIES VC3-M: The convertible returned to the 300K lineup. Styling paralleled the 300 series, although the external chrome was left to a bare minimum. Interiors were more luxuriously detailed, but the leather interior was optional. The between-the-seat console was standard and now contained an automatic transmission shifter (no push buttons on the 300K). The standard engine was a hydraulic camshaft of more aggressive duration than that of the New Yorker. The ram-induction manifold – paired with the mechanical camshaft engine of 1963 was available as an option.
The 300 K was available as a coupe or convertible.
