1965 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1965 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars
NOTE: The 1965 Plymouth Belvedere and Satellite were mid-size cars based on their 116 inch wheelbase. Plymouth now offered full size car on a 119 inch wheelbase and named them Fury I, II, III, and Sport Fury. They are NOT covered in this Fact Sheet.
Fury Moves to Full Size
In 1965, Plymouth moved the Fury to a full-size car, on a 119″ wheelbase and Belvedere remained as the intermediate size offering.
Belvedere Now Top Dog
Belvedere models were little changed, with most dimensions and weights remaining the same. The Belvedere nameplate was no longer used to designate the level of trim and equipment. It was now used to delineate all Plymouth mid-size cars and was the same platform as had been used for all Plymouths one year earlier. The line was broken out as Belvedere I (entry level) Belvedere II (mid level) and Belvedere Satellite (sport level) though the “Belvedere” nameplate was not attached to the Satellite nameplates.
Satellite Added as the Performance Entry
The Satellite was presented as a sport model and available only as hardtop coupe and convertible. Bucket seats and a center console were standard equipment with a V-8 engine as the base powerplant. The 273 CID “LA” V-8 was standard equipment, with the old “A” 318 CID, the “B” 361 and 383, and the “RB” 426 CID V-8 engines as optional. It should be noted that the 426 Hemi was a race engine special ordered for professional race teams and fitted to this mid-size car for competition only.
Styling Changes Minimal.
The front fascia was redesigned from 1964, and featured single headlights on each side, and a grille divided into four thin rectangles laid horizontally. The rear was only mildly re-trimmed, and of course, no mention of “Fury” would be seen.
Historical
Mid-size sales decreased from close to 259 thousand this year, the new full size Fury sales added a new 285 thousand units for Plymouth, jumping total sales by almost 200 thousand over 1964. While not a boon for the 116-inch mid-size offering, for Plymouth this was an outstanding success.
1965 Plymouth Mid-Size Car Factoids
- Fury Moves Upstream
- The Super Stock 426 CID V-8 Wedge Head is Gone
- Front Fascia is Major Styling Change in 1965
This year, the Fury and Sport Fury moved upscale in price and size, leaving the Satellite to occupy this space in the old Fury mid-size space. All the performance engines from 1964 were still available, and the Satellite could NOT be had with an I-6 powerplant.

The 426 CID Super Stock III V-8 was removed in 1965 in place of the Hemi, introduced in the previous year. Thereafter, competition engines would only use the Hemi Head, with the 426 Street wedge being the only offering.

With the major emphasis at Plymouth being the introduction of the long wheelbase full size Fury and Sport Fury, styling was, for the most part left alone, with the exception of the front fascia. Single vertical headlights replaced dual, and a horizontal center bar and grille openings emphasized width. The forward thrust of the fenders was at the top rather than the middle.

Belvedere I – This series had, as standard equipment, heater and defroster, front seat belts, oil filter, and five blackwall tires. Trim consisted of a straight, three-quarter length side body molding from the front door edge back and with “Belvedere I” in script ahead of it.
Belvedere I models were: 2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, and 6-passenger Station Wagon.
Belvedere II – This series’ models had, in addition to the Belvedere I models, carpeting, special trim and upholstery, foam cushions, and backup lights. Exterior trim included wide, full-length slanting horizontal moldings with color insert, “Belvedere II” in script behind front wheel openings and rocker panel brightwork.
Belvedere II models were: 2-door Hardtop, Convertible, 4-door Sedan and 6- and 9-passenger Station Wagons.
Satellite – The Satellite was considered the premium level in the mid-size line. Though officially the “Belvedere Satellite”, it did not display the Belvedere name anywhere. It had the visuals of a rich and sporty line. Satellite models had all equipment of the Belvedere II models plus front bucket seats, center console, full wheel covers, and all-vinyl trim on the two-door hardtop model. Side trim moldings were deleted, but chrome louvers were placed on the Satellite’s rear fenders and stainless rocker panel moldings were fitted, as well as wheel opening moldings, “Satellite” in script on the front fenders. A rear deck latch panel horizontal beauty strip was unique to the model line.
The Satellite models were: 2-door Hardtop and Convertible only. All Satellite models were V-8 equipped with the 273 CID V-8 standard – and a choice of 318, 361, 383 and the 426 Street wedge V-8s.
