1969 Mercury Cougar Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Mercury Cougar  Facts

For the 1969 model year, the Cougar underwent a mid-cycle revision. The straight-lined body sides transitioned – now toward the popular “Coke bottle” styling. This was distinguished by a sweeping body crease sloping down from the hood line to the rear wheels. The roof line saw little change to its design, however. The vent windows were deleted. The front fascia retained its full-width grille, but the “vertical slats grille were replaced by a horizontal ones. The concave taillamp lenses replaced the previous convex units. The hidden headlamps were retained; but the mechanism shifted from dual vacuum actuators to a single, centrally-located piece. The back-up lights wrapped around the rear fenders.

A convertible body style was added to the model line, available in both standard and XR-7 trim, and a power-operated top was standard. The “Cougar Eliminator” replaced the GT-E model.  Rocker panel strips, wheel well opening moldings and two parallel full-length upper body pinstripes were standard. The Cobra jet engine was widely available across the entire line.

Special Packages

  • The 302 CID V-8 was standard in the “Eliminator” performance package. It featured blacked-out grille, ram-air hood scoop, special side body stripe, and front and rear spoilers.
  • The 290 HP 351 CID V-8 was standard in the “351” performance package. This option included competition handling package, dual stripes, and a “power dome” hood.
  • The ram-air induction option came with the 428 CID V-8, a hood scoop and F70 x 14 tires. High-performance rear axles and heavy-duty Traction-Lok differential were optional.
  • The Decor Group included Deluxe wheel covers; curb molding; rim blow steering wheel; custom grade seat; door and quarter trim; door mounted courtesy lights; rear seat armrests and windshield pillar and roof rail pads.
  • GT appearance group for Cougar, included comfort weave vinyl bucket seats; rim-blow steering wheel; remote-control left-hand racing mirror; turbine design wheel covers; GT decal; GT dash nameplate and F70 x 14 fiber glass belted tire.

Of note: 92.4 percent of 1969 Cougars had power steering, 89.4 percent had automatic transmission, 57 percent had tinted glass, and 58.9 percent had power brakes. Two Cougars were produced with the Boss 429 CID engine.

During 1969, the Eliminator was introduced. It replaced the Cougar GT-E as the performance Cougar. Offered solely as a standard Cougar hardtop and not available as convertible or XR-7, the Eliminator was offered with all available Cougar engines, with the Windsor 351 CID 4-barrel as the standard engine. The Boss 302 engine was optional and exclusive to the Eliminator.

1969 Mercury Cougar Facts Specifications Information Data For the first time since its introduction in 1967, a convertible was offered. It was available in Standard or XR7 trim, but not in the Cougar Eliminator.

The 351 CID “Windsor” V-8 was now available. It was a raised deck version of the venerable 289-302 “Windsor” V-8 with a longer stroke, but the same bore as the smaller engine. The crankshaft had larger main and rod journals, and the heads had larger valves.

Offered solely as a standard Cougar hardtop and not available as convertible or XR-7, the Eliminator was offered with all available Cougar engines, with the Windsor 351 CID 4-barrel as the standard engine. These included the 351W-4V engine, a front air dam and body-colored rear spoiler, styled steel wheels, a blacked-out front grille, body-colored hood scoop that was only functional with ram-air 428CJ engine, Eliminator-specific body side stripes in white or black, left-hand remote-control racing-style side mirror, heavy-duty suspension, and a performance axle. Interior upgrades included Hi-Back bucket seats, and unique “black camera case” instrument panels with full instrumentation including visual warning lights and gauges, tachometer, trip odometer, and rallye clock. Four exterior colors were available: white, bright blue metallic, competition orange, and bright yellow. Optional engines included: 390-4V, 428 Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet, and Boss 302. 2,250 Eliminators were built for 1969.

The Cougar Sports Special package was offered only in 1969 and was only available on the Standard hardtop model Cougar. There were four levels to the Sport Special package, with each adding additional features.

  • Package A included: unique pin striping, “turbine” style wheel covers, rocker panel moldings with simulated side scoops, and a remote-control racing-style side mirror.
  • Package B included the Package A items, as well as adding the interior Decor Group option, which featured upgraded seating surfaces and interior trim panels with door-mounted courtesy lights, and a “rim-blow” steering wheel.
  • Package C included the Package A items, as well as the Special Handling Package, featuring improved tires and heavy-duty suspension components.
  • Package D combined all other packages: Package A, the Interior Decor package, and the Special Handling package. The Sports Special could be combined with any available engine.

For 1969, the Hertz Rental Car Company purchased Cougar Eliminators as part of their “Rent-A-Racer” program. These Eliminators were ordered with the electric sunroof option, which was not available on Eliminators sold to the public. All of the Hertz Eliminators were equipped with the 351-4V engine and the Select-Shift automatic transmission. They were identically optioned, except for paint and interior trim colors. There were 101 Hertz Eliminators built in 1969.
