1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II

Chevrolet introduced an extensive sharp-edged restyle of the Chevy II. The proportions were squared up but dimensions and features changed only slightly. New was a bold grille and a semi-fastback roof line. The fenders in a new and very angular rear were much more like the larger 1966 Chevrolets, though the 1966 Chevy II/Nova had vertical taillights and single headlights. Even with the change, the lineup still started with Chevy II 100, the Chevy II Nova, and the Nova SS (Super Sport). Significant was the addition of the 350 HP 327 CID V-8 in place of the 300 HP version.

At the top of the list was the Super Sport, available only in a Sport Coupe. The 194 CID I-6 was standard on the Super Sport, but any Chevy II engine except the base four-cylinder could be installed in the SS. The SS was visually distinguished by wide rocker panels and a bright aluminum rear cove. It had a SS emblem on the grille and in rear cove, and “Super Sport” in script on the quarter panels. Wheel covers were borrowed from the previous year’s Malibu SS. Bucket front seats were included, but a tachometer was an add-in option. Front and rear emblems displayed “Chevy II SS.”

The 90 HP 153 CID I-4 engine was only offered in the base Chevy II 100 series models. Buyers, however, could order the 194 CID I-6 engine, or the 230 CID I-6, a 195 HP, 220 HP 283 CID V-8, or a 275 HP 327 CID V-8. Also available for the first time was the new L79 Turbo-Fire 327 CID V-8 delivering 350 HP! This engine, with the close-ratio 4-speed transmission turned the Nova into a full bore muscle car. (The Powerglide automatic transmission was not available with the 350 HP V-8).

You can see the listing for the 327 CID V-8 options in the 1966 Chevy II 327 CID AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

The L79 version of the 327 CID V-8 engine. Inside were forged, high-compression pistons, a performance camshaft, high-flowing cylinder heads, and an aluminum intake with a four-barrel 585 CFM Holley carburetor. Due to the camshaft’s overlap, it would not properly idle when mated to an automatic transmission thus no Powerglide was offered. See the specifications on the 350 HP 327 in the 1966 Chevy II AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

An all new body was created for 1966, featuring single unit headlamps in new bright bezels, a refined anodized aluminum front grille, and turn directional signal lights in the front bumper. At the rear were new vertical-type taillights, of the single unit type with built-in backup lamps.
