1964 Chevrolet Chevy II Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1964 Chevrolet Chevy II
As may be known, in almost every way, the creators of the Chevy II used the 1961 Falcon as a benchmark. But things were changing by 1964. Only minor changes were made. The 1964 Chevy II had a redesigned grille. Nine vertical bars were equally spaced along the five, full-width horizontal blades. This gave a quadrant effect. Side trim treatments were more like the 1962 look than the 1963 appearance.
This year, sales were diminished due to the introduction of the new Chevelle. Meanwhile, the Chevy II received its first factory V-8 option, a 195 HP 283 CID engine. Later, the 220 HP version would be listed as available. Also introduced was the new 230 CID, 155 HP I-6. This six-cylinder was all-new, replacing the older I-6 engine, but based upon the I-4 and I-6 engines introduced for the Chevy II previously.
The Super Sport package was absent at the start of the year, but returned later. On the outside were “Nova SS” badges on the quarters and rear cove area. Inside it contained bucket seats, a floor shift, and a console as well as a special dash. Also missing and not to return this year was the convertible. It is assumed that Chevrolet did not want the drop top to compete with the new mid-size convertible.
The V-8 was a big hit, with 25,083 sold this year. Motor Trend concluded that: “By adding a V-8 and bigger brakes, plus detail changes, Chevrolet has made a nice compact even more desirable and a much better performer.”

The 283 CID V-8 was available in 195 and 220 HP versions. It transformed the Chevy II from a grocery-getter to a mini-muscle car. It wouldn’t be long before the 327 CID V-8 found a home in the engine bay. See the specifications on the 283 in the 1964 Chevy II AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

With little notice, the convertible disappeared from the lineup. The common rationale is that Chevrolet did not want the very popular model competing with the new Chevelle convertible, If that was so, it was a poor decision, dropping a potential 25,000 vehicles from the sales figures.

The 230 CID I-6 was made available in the Chevy II this year. It had been designed from the newer I-4 and I-6 engines originally made for the Chevy II by using the I-4’s 3.875 inch bore and the 196 CID I-6’s 3.25 inch stroke. See the specifications on the 230 I-6 in the 1964 Chevy II AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.
