General Year Information – 1958 Ford Thunderbird
This was the first year for the four-passenger “Square Bird.” For the first time, Thunderbirds were offered as either a hardtop or convertible, each being a separate model. The hardtop was introduced on Jan. 13,1958 with the convertible not available until June of 1958. The new personal Thunderbirds were over 18 inches longer and 1000 pounds heavier than their 1957 counterparts. The new car featured a top with squared-off “C” pillar. It had chrome trim along the base of the top and a small Thunderbird crest directly above the trim. A massive, one-piece bumper surrounded a honeycomb grille. The honeycomb look was duplicated in stamped and painted steel around the four circular taillights. “Thunderbird” in script appeared on the front fenders and five chrome stripes were placed on the door at the feature line. Inside, front bucket seats and a vinyl covered console were used for the first time.
The only available engine was Ford’s new “FE” (Ford-Edsel) 352 CID V-8. It was an all-new design with little to remind one of the Y-bock. It had an integral intake manifold, front-place distributor, standard intake ports (not stacked as in the Y-Block) and wedge combustion chambers. It was mildly cammed and developed 300 HP at 4600 RPM.
The new car had all the available features/options that might be found in the upscale Lincoln – power windows and seats, air conditioning, power steering, and brakes. Surprisingly the standard transmission was a 3-speed manual. The new car was even more “luxury” and a heck of lot less “sport”. Ford hit the market right as was proven by an almost doubling of sales to 37,890. The new car would define the segment, and it would take GM 7 years to respond, with Only Chrysler’s oversized and much more expensive 300 letter series cars snipping at the edge of the market.

The 2-seat T-Bird had the option of a removable fiberglass hardtop that v=could be installed, but it was just a “cap” on the convertible body. The new Thunderbird came in two true models a convertible and a fixed-roof hardtop. In fact, the hardtop became much more popular, always outselling the convertible thorough 1960!

The major change in approach for the Thunderbird was to move further away from “Sporty” and more toward “personal luxury” – ostensibly to become a 4-seat mini-Lincoln. The new car filled a void that some GM cars had tried, but utilized the large car chassis – Cadillac Eldorado, being the survivor. Timing was excellent and the car sold well in the middle of a recession.
The big news at Ford (and Thunderbird) was the release of the “FE” (Ford/Edsel) V-8. It was an all-new design with a maximum bore of 4.00 and a stroke of 3.50 for 352 CID in Thunderbird. It was rated at 300 HP at 4600 RPM. Surprisingly there was no “performance” engine, due to Ford’s adherence to the American Manufacturers Association’s “Racing Ban”. An over-the-counter mechanical “race” cam was offered.

The 1958 Thunderbird was now offered in a hardtop body style. The new car was much larger than the previous 1955-57 version. It needed a longer 113.0 inch wheelbase for the new back seat. This increased size. It was now a unit body car, not frame and body construction. The styling was all new with quad headlights, larger tailfins, an integrated chrome bumper-grille, and a larger, though now nonfunctional, hood scoop. Significant was the move away from the Y-block V-8 to the new “FE” 300 HP 352 HP V-8, available with a three-speed manual, overdrive, or automatic transmissions. The 1958 model year sales of the hardtop were 35,758 units, an increase of over 13,000 over the previous year.
The 1958 Thunderbird was also offered in a convertible body style, although the convertible was not introduced until June 1958. The new car was much larger than the previous 1955-57 version. It needed a longer 113.0 inch wheelbase for the new back seat. It was now a unit body car, not frame and body construction. The styling was all new with quad headlights, larger tailfins, an integrated chrome bumper-grille, and a larger, though now nonfunctional, hood scoop. Significant was the move away from the Y-block V-8 to the new “FE” 300 HP 352 CID V-8, available with a three-speed manual, overdrive, or automatic transmissions. The 1958 model year convertible sales were small – only 2,134 units – but still strong, considering its late-model year introduction.
