1957 Ford Thunderbird –  Slick Restyle and More Power

The 1957 model received sleek restyling. A longer rear section provided improved storage space allowing relocation of the spare tire back into the trunk. Thunderbirds featured true fins on the rear fenders. Inside, the 1957 model used the instrument panel from full-sized 1956 Fords, with an engine-turned insert dressing-up the panel. HP was up with the “standard” 312 CID V-8 now at 245 HP.

1957 Ford Thunderbird Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1957 Ford Thunderbird

The Thunderbird was revised for 1957 with a reshaped front bumper, a larger grille and tailfins, and different style tail lamps. The instrument panel was restyled using the instrument panel from full-sized 1956 Fords – with round gauges in a single pod, and n engine-turned insert dressing up the panel. The rear of the car was lengthened to allow the spare tire to be re-positioned back into the trunk.

The 312 CID V-8 was rated at an increased 245 HP via the addition of a more aggressive camshaft and a larger 4-barrel carburetor. Other, more powerful versions of this V-8 were available, including one with two four-barrel Holley carburetors allowing 270 HP, and another with a Paxton VR supercharger rated at 300 HP. Racing versions of these engines were rated at 285 and 340 HP, respectively. Surprisingly, the 3-speed standard transmission version still sported the 292 CID V-8 as standard, though now all the 312 CID engines, from 245 to 300 HP were optional. The automatic and the overdrive transmission models had the 245 HP engine as their base powerplant.

The Ford Thunderbird had done everything Ford intended for it to do. It captured the hearts of America. It was considered by many as it was the car to own and be seen in. As such, it brought people into Ford showrooms so they could see it first hand, and then the sales teams could convince the potential customer to buy another Ford model if the Thunderbird wasn’t right for them.

Though Ford was pleased to see sales of the Thunderbird rise to a highest ever 21,380 units for 1957, a newer, 4-seat ‘Bird was in the works. it would respond to the one major complaint – the car only had space for one passenger. While many would complain that the planned 4-seat “Square-Bird” was not the car that the ’55-57 was, sales numbers would  decry that by a large margin.

The 1957 T-Bird got very serious about performance this year with the introduction of the Supercharged 312 CID V-8. Some think that this was in response to the Fuel Injected Corvette, but it was more in response to the desire to dominate NASCAR and USAC racing. The “street” version was rated at a mild 300 HP, but the “race” version pumped out a minimum of 340 due to a more aggressive camshaft and head work.

The major interior change in 1957 was the new dashboard. It utilized the layout from the 1956 Full-Size Ford but added a more aggressive series of gauges including a 140 MPH speedometer and a tachometer. The engine-turned aluminum face was much more race car-like and the pleats on the padded dash added a bit more pizazz. The door panels were upgraded to match the look of the dash as well.

Ford Motor Co. was making a big investment in comfort and convenience options in 1957, one of which was a “memory” seat for the T-Bird. it could be set to “remember” 5 different fore-aft and up-down positions.

The industry was moving to lower profile tires and 14″ wheels almost across the board – ostensibly to lower the overall height, center of gravity and roll center.  Of course, the reduction of air around the brake drums was not a positive result.

There was only one model Thunderbird, a two-seat convertible coupe, with the only option as a body style was to order the fiberglass top to enclose it for inclement weather. The Thunderbird was revised for 1957 with a reshaped front bumper, a larger grille and tailfins, different style tail lamps. The instrument panel was restyled using the instrument panel from full-sized 1956 Fords – with round gauges in a single pod, and an engine-turned insert dressing up the panel. The rear of the car was lengthened to allow the spare tire to be re-positioned back into the trunk.

Also, the 1957 Thunderbird received upgraded engines including a 300-340 HP supercharged 312 CID V-8.
