1967 Pontiac Firebird Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Pontiac Firebird

The first generation Firebird had the Coke bottle styling shared with its sister, the Chevrolet Camaro. The Firebird’s bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look. The Firebird’s rear taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO and Pontiac Grand Prix. A two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. The car was a response to Pontiac’s desire to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car. GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales, so instead, got to share the  F-body platform with Chevrolet.

The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the Pontiac 230  CID SOHC inline-six. It was fitted with a one-barrel Rochester carburetor and rated at 165 HP. The upscale “Sprint” model six came with a four-barrel carburetor and developed 215 HP. Many buyers opted for one of three V-8 engines: either the 326 CID with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 HP, or the four-barrel “HO” 326 CID unit, producing 285  HP; or the 325 HP 400 CID V-8 from the GTO. A “Ram Air” option was also available rated at the same 325 HP but peaked at 5,200 RPM.

External features included sculptured styling, bucket seats, twin grilles of a bumper-integral design and three vertical air slots on the leading edge of rear body panels. The two body styles came with any of the Tempest or GTO power trains.

However, the two body styles were marketed as five different “models” created by adding Regular Production Orders (RPO) equipment in certain specific combinations. Production records were not kept according to the RPO packages, but by the number of I-6 and V-8 models built with standard or deluxe features. You can view the RPO breakouts below.

The Firebird was a great success, with 82,560 produced in its first year.

In addition to the introduction of the new small journal engine, now 400 CID and in the Firebird. rated at 325 HP came and additional performance option – “Ram Air”.  While the RA engine was rated the same as the standard 400 CID  unit, it boasted the GTO’s 301/313 cam.  See 1967 the Firebird AMA Specifications Sheet for more information HERE.

Like the Pontiac Tempest, the OHC I-6 was available in a performance version, with 215 HP . This engine was quire compatible with the sporty, and more nimble Firebird, giving more acceleration and better handling due to its lighter body and its smaller dimensions. See 1967 the Firebird AMA Specifications Sheet for more information HERE.

Some say the figure was a marketing issue, with the Firebird not allowed to display a HP equal the touted GTO).
