General Year Information – 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

The styling of the 1968 Camaro was the 1967 design with only minor changes. The Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system allowed for the side vent windows to be deleted. Side marker lights were added on the front and rear fenders as part of safety requirements for all 1968 vehicles. To styling changes were an ever-more pointed front grille and divided rear taillights. The front running lights on non-RS models were also changed from circular to oval. The big-block SS models received chrome hood inserts that imitated velocity stacks as well as a low-gloss black rear tail light panel.

The rear shock absorber mounting was staggered to resolve wheel hop issues and higher performance models received multi-leaf rear springs instead of single-leaf units. A 396 CID 350 HP big block engine was added as an option for the SS models and the Z28 appeared in Camaro brochures as well as having its own version. The 427 CID V-8 was still not available as a Regular Production Option (RPO) due to GM brass intervention.

Chevrolet’s Special Production Division convinced Chevrolet’s General Manager Pete Estes, that a convertible was not practical, but as the General Manager only drove convertible vehicles, a Central Office Production Order (COPO) was placed for the only Z/28 convertible ever Camaro built.

NOTE: The major option packages; “RS” “SS” and “Z/28” are discussed in detail below.

The 350 HP 396 proved very popular as a fit between the tame 325 HP version and the monster 375 HP version in the Chevelle line, so a go ahead was given to install it in the Camaro. See the specifications for this engine in the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

The Special Aluminum heads for the 375 HP 396 engine were now available. They saved 70 lbs over the standard 396 CID V-8, but didn’t add appreciably to the power. Also, they cost an additional $395 over the standard L78’s $316 option price – making them an option only for serious racers. See information in the AMA Specifications Sheets HERE.

The base model featured: slender body sill moldings, black plastic grille, single-unit headlights, grille-mounted parking lights, small, bright metal hubcaps, tail lights with bright bezels and built-in backup lights, windshield pillar and rear belt moldings and manual-operating top on convertible.

Standard interior features included color-keyed all vinyl trim with Strato-bucket front seats and scuff-resistant cowl side panels with ventilator grilles, color-keyed carpeting, front arm rests with bright bases, cigarette lighter, built-in instrument panel ash tray, automatic front door switches for dome or courtesy lights, locking glove compartment, friction-type ventipanes and, in convertibles, built-in arm rests and dual courtesy lights.

In addition to the base model, the Rally Sport Camaro adds to the appearance. On the exterior there are “RS” emblems on the grille and on the rear fuel filler cap, a full-width, black lattice grille with concealed headlights, lower body side molding, a black accent just below body side molding (with certain colors); color-keyed body accent stripes, special styling for parking/turning lights at the front, sports-styled backup lights, and a distinctive edged-in-black taillight treatment with two lamps in each taillight unit for driving, braking and turn signal indication, bright metal front and rear wheel opening moldings, and bright drip gutter molding on sport coupes.

In the interior, there is a “RS” emblem on the steering wheel center.

On the exterior of the SS350 there is unique color-keyed hood striping plus simulated louvers on the hood. “SS” letters are placed at the front of the front fenders and an “SS 350” emblem is in the center of the grille. At the rear, hthere is a “SS 350” emblem on the fuel filler cap. On the inside a “SS 350” emblem appears in the steering wheel center. SS 350 models are appropriately shod with red stripe tires.

The SS 350 was standard with the 350 CID 295 HP V-8, with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

The Z/28 option featured a high-output small-block 302 CID V-8, designed for racing in Trans-Am racing series. It had an aluminum intake manifold, and a 4-barrel vacuum secondary 780 CFM Holley carburetor. The Z/28 came with upgraded suspension, power front disc brakes, and a 4-speed Muncie close-ratio manual transmission. Posi-traction was optional. Wide racing stripes on the hood and trunk lid could be deleted at no charge, “302” front fender emblems came on early 1968 cars, with the “Z/28” emblems in late 1968. Advertised power of the 302 was listed at 290 HP at 5300 RPM. This was under-rated to keep the horsepower rating under 1 HP per cubic inch for insurance premium calculations and racing classification.
