1969 Chevelle Facts, Figures, and Specifications
1969 – Updating From
the Previous Year
For 1969, the Chevelle used the same chassis and body of 1968 with new front and rear styling, though not radically different. The 350 CID V-8, available in Camaro since 1967, replaced the 327 V-8. The car had a new front fascia and at the rear, there were larger taillight lenses mounted in the body corners.

1969 Chevelle Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Facts
1969 Chevelles were marketed as “America’s most popular mid-size car.” That being the case, they had only minor styling changes for 1969, except for the new front fascia styling. A single chrome bar connected quad headlights in front of a revised front grille, now cast in plastic, and a slotted bumper, centered in the middle that held the parking lights. Taillight lenses were larger and more vertical, and merged into the quarter panels. The side marker light bezels were smaller, and shared with the Camaro who had and used the lens assembly in 1968.
On hardtops and convertibles, front vent windows disappeared with the introduction of Astro Ventilation. The Chevelle lineup was slimmed down to Nomad wagons, 300 Deluxe, Malibu with the Concours 4-door, and Concours Estate wagon series part of the Malibu and wagon series, respectively. There was no longer a base 300. In a surprise move, the SS 396 was now a $347.60 option package for any two-door model – no longer a series of its own .
NOTE on COPO Chevelles: An estimated 323 Chevelle 2-door hardtops were fitted with an L72 427 CID V-8, rated at 425 HP @ 5,800 RPM and 460 lb⋅ft of torque @ 4,000 RPM utilizing the COPO (Central Office Production Order) system to get around the 400 CID engine limit for mid-size GM cars.

- 327 CID grows to 350 CID
- Turbo 350 Transmission Appears
- SS 396 is No Longer a Line - Now an Option
- 427 CID L72 is Available as a COPO
The 350 CID V-8,was a 327 CID V-8 with a 3.480″stroke. It first appeared as a high-performance L-48 option for the 1967 Camaro. In 1968, it was available in the Chevrolet Nova. In 1969, the rest of the Chevrolet line could be ordered with a 350. There were two versions, LM1, which used a hydraulic cam, 4-barrel Quadra-jet carburetor, cast pistons, 2-bolt main block. Option L48 was a high performance version used a hydraulic cam, 4-barrel Quadra-jet carburetor, cast pistons, 4-bolt main block. See Engine Section, below for complete specifications.

The Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 was developed to replace the two-speed Super Turbine 300 and Powerglide transmissions. The 350s were manufactured by Buick and by Chevrolet See the specs on page 16 HERE.

The SS 396, was now an option rather than a line. Now RPO code Z25 with its baseline 325-horse 396, heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, 14 x 7-inch SS wheels with F70-14 tires. It was available on any two-door model in the Chevelle family. The performance package cost $347.60. The 325, 350 and 375 HP 396 CID engines were still available.
In 1969, through a Central Office Production Order (COPO), one could order a Chevelle with a 427 CID V-8, option L72. The COPO order bypassed the GM rule that disallowed engines above 400 CID on vehicles other than the Corvette or the full sized car. Today these 323 COPO Chevelles are some of the most collectible Chevrolets. See the specifications for the L72 in the 1966 Corvette AMA Spec Sheets HERE.
NOTE: Due to a camshaft change in 1967 that changed oiling to the lifters, a new camshaft was used with 316°/302° duration, with 0.520″ lift, versus the older 336°/336°. Power ratings were unaffected.
1969 Chevelle Facts – Models Offered
Click a Tab to See the Details
Standard equipment on Chevelle 300 Deluxe models included all GM safety features; head restraints (as a mandatory option); heater and defroster; front arm rests; dual headlights; 7.35 x 14 four-ply rated blackwall tires and either a 140 horsepower Six or 200 horsepower V-8 as base powerplant. The Chevelle Deluxe models were characterized, externally, by thin rocker panel moldings; bright metal windshield and rear window framing; bright metal roof drip moldings and series identification badges on the front fenders, behind the wheel opening.
The base El Camino was considered part of this model line, however we note it separately. The SS 396 was now option Z-25 and was now offered as an option package on any two door model Chevelle DeLuxe. For an accurate description of Chevelle DeLuxe models, please see the Chevelle Brochure HERE.
The Malibu model included all equipment found on the base line, plus Hide Away two-speed wipers; Deluxe steering wheel; glove box light; window moldings; and carpets.
A new trend at Chevrolet made it difficult to delineate specific identification features on Malibu models. Details varied according to body type and the optional equipment packages that a buyer ordered. In fact, it was possible to order Chevelles (including Malibu models and all other models) in over 300 different variations. As examples, the Malibu four-door hard top (Sports sedan) with the RPO 216 Concours package or the Malibu two-door hardtop (Sports coupe) with Argent Silver lower body side treatment. A convertible was also available in Malibu trim and had all of the above standard equipment, plus courtesy lights.
In May of 1969, several pages of new or revised options packages were released by Chevrolet. This allowed one to “customize” any Chevelle to almost any degree. The SS 396 was now option Z25 was now offered as an option package on any two door Malibu model. For an accurate description of Chevelle Malibu models, please see the Chevelle Brochure HERE.
Station wagons reverted to the practice of the early 60s in the full size line with Nomad, Greenbrier, and Concours models now their own line. The Nomad, however, was the base model, trimmed as a Chevelle DeLuxe – it was only available as a 2-seat version, the Greenbrier was trimmed as a base Malibu and the Concours, now was offered as a standard and an “Estate”, with the Estate featuring faux wood side trim. For an accurate description of Chevelle Wagons, please see the Station Wagon Brochure HERE.
The El Camino model came in Base and Custom trim. The Base model was trimmed as a Chevelle DeLuxe and the Custom was trimmed as a Malibu. Colors were as set for the regular line. For an accurate description of the El Camino line, please see the Brochure HERE.
