1964 Ford Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1964 Ford Full Size Car
Full size Fords were completely revamped for 1964. They were recognizable as Ford products because of the traditional large, round taillights. The grille was new, and carried a horizontal grid highlighted with three vertical ribs. “Ford” in block letters was placed on the front of the hood, on all models, but side trim differed, depending on the model. All had a sheetmetal feature line began on the front fender at belt line level. It continued horizontally, to the rear of the car, and dipped down. A lower sheet metal feature line began behind the front wheels and continued, horizontally, toward the rear of the car. There it swept upward and merged with the upper feature line. All models using optional, large displacement V-8s, carried the engine designation symbol on the lower front fender.
The Model names were revised in the two lesser lines with the “300” becoming the “Custom” and the “Galaxie” changed to the “Custom 500”. All other model line names remained the same. The notch back hardtop, known as the “Victoria” was no longer offered – all 2-door hardtops were of “Sportsroof” (fastback) design.
This was a strong year in full size sales with an increase of over 80,000 units.

The Custom series was the base trim level. It included chrome windshield and rear window moldings; two sun visors, chrome horn ring, arm rests on all doors and three cast ‘stripes’ on the front fenders, just behind the headlights.
The Custom was available as a 2- door Sedan and 4-door Sedan only.
The Custom 500 was the upper trim level of the base-line Custom Series and included chrome windshield and rear window moldings; Nylon carpeting (instead of the rubber mats used in the Custom models); arm rests with ash trays on all doors; two sun visors and all trim used in the Custom models, plus a single horizontal chrome strip on the exterior body side.
The Custom 500 was available as a 2- door Sedan and 4-door Sedan only.
The Galaxie 500 was the intermediate trim level for 1964 and included all Custom trim, plus chrome fender top ornamentation, chrome window frames, the Ford crest on the roof ‘C’ pillar and a full length chrome strip (which split at the rear of the front doors and included an aluminum insert forward of that point). ‘Galaxie 500’, in script, was included in the aluminum insert, at the front of the stripe. A stamped aluminum insert also highlighted the rear treatment and included “Galaxie 500” in script, on the right side of the insert. Two-tone vinyl trim was used on the side of the doors and on the seats.
The Galaxie 500 was available as a 2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop, 4-door hardtop, and Convertible.
The Galaxie 500XL was the top trim level for 1964 and included all the trim features of the Galaxie models, plus, bucket seats and floor mounted transmission shifter; polished door trim panels; dual-lens courtesy /warning lights in the doors; rear reading lights in hardtops and Galaxie 500XL badges on the body exterior. The 289 cubic inch, 195 horsepower V-8 engine was standard on all XL series vehicles.
The Galaxie 500 XL was available as a 2-door Hardtop, 4-door hardtop, and Convertible only.
The Country Sedans were the base trim level station wagons for 1964, with the Country Squires being the top trim level. The trim paralleled the Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500XL models of conventional cars. Both were available in 6- and 9-passener configurations.
