1960 Chevrolet – Let’s Tone it Down a Bit

GM’s styling department toned down Chevrolet for 1960 after complaints from prospective buyers about the 1959 car – and some loss of sales as well. For Chevrolet in 1960, the radical design of the previous year was muted.  A new oval grille enclosed dual headlamps. Missile inspired side trim was used.

General Year Information – 1960 Chevrolet Facts

This year a new oval grille enclosed dual headlamps. Missile inspired side trim was used. The “seagull” style fins were more angular. Small circular tail lamps were set into a beauty panel at the rear.

This was the last year for a Sedan Delivery and also for the full-size El Camino.

The full-size El Camino only had a two-year run with only 14,163 produced in this year.  The market was not ready for a car-based pickup and regular truck-based sales were booming, so the model quietly faded away.  Likewise, the Sedan Delivery also died.

BISCAYNE SERIES: 1100 I-6 & 1200 V-8. Biscayne identification came from “Biscayne” in script on the front fenders, a painted rear beauty panel and a single quarter panel trim molding. Standard equipment included dual sun visors, electric wipers, cigarette lighter and front arm rests, previously considered as Deluxe equipment.

The Brookwood station wagon line was sold as part of a separate station wagon series but were trimmed and numbered as Biscaynes. They were identified by “Brookwood” on the front fender in script.

FLEETMASTER SERIES: 1300 I-6 & 1400 V-8. Trimmed as a Biscayne, they had  a painted rear beauty panel and a single quarter panel trim molding. They were an economy sub-series for corporate fleet use was provided in two models that were marketed without the Deluxe internal trim items.

BEL AIR SERIES: 1500 I-6 & 1600 V-8. A shield medallion split the words “Bel Air” on front fender s. A single rear quarter extension molding moved rearward from the missile ornament. The rear beauty panel was horizontally grooved and outlined with bright metal trim. All Biscayne features were standard, plus front foam cushions, deluxe steering wheel, and power tailgate on Kingswood station wagon.

Impala Models – 1700 (6-CYL) and SERIES  1700 (V-8).  The Impala exterior was much more dressed up than the Bel Air. A short molding strip extended back from the headlights. Twin pairs of bar moldings were above and below this strip on the fender tips. The quarter panel missile ornaments had two moldings heading to the rear, with the area between them filled with a white insert and “Impala” in script along with the crossed racing flags insignia. Triple tail lights and a vertically ribbed aluminum rear beauty panel made up the rear fascia. Except for convertibles, all Impalas had simulated vents on the lower rear window molding.

Standard equipment was as fitted to the Bel Air, plus parking brake, glove compartment and backup lights; anodized aluminum trim; electric clock, and on V-8s, an oil filter and an oil bath air cleaner.

EL CAMINO & SEDAN DELIVERY:  SERIES 1100 (I-6) &  SERIES 1200 (V-8).  Both the El Camino and Sedan Delivery had the same passenger car appearance changes for 1960. The grille was oval-shaped with two free-floating headlights at either end. A cross-bar arrangement of moldings held the bow tie emblem in a smaller oval at the center. They were backed by full width horizontal bars. Parking lamps were underneath the redesigned bumper. The rear had angular gull-wing fins. Below them was a horizontal full width oval with two round tail lamps at each end. The El Camino had an integral cargo bed and cab roof with rear overhang.

Exterior and interior trim for the El Camino was similar to the Bel Air level. Exterior and interior trim for the Sedan Delivery was similar to the Biscayne level.
