1964 Pontiac – New-Sized Intermediates Bow

New mid-sized GM vehicles were released in 1964. The famous GTO option package debuted as well. The GTO package circumvented GM’s cubic inch ban by making the 389 CID V-8 an option, rather than a model. It was an immediate hit and started the muscle car wars.

General Year Information – 1964 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars

Tempest and LeMans
In 1964, the Tempest was redesigned into a more-conventional vehicle. It was enlarged from a larger compact to an intermediate-sized car with a 115 inch wheelbase and an overall length of 203 inches (the exact size of a 1957 Chevrolet). The unibody, curved driveshaft and transaxle were gone, replaced by a traditional front engine, front transmission, body-on-frame, and solid rear axle design used by all of GM’s other cars except for the Corvette and Corvair. Together with its sister cars, the Oldsmobile F-85/Cutlass, Buick Special/Skylark and Chevrolet Chevelle), the Tempest/LeMans moved to the new the A-Body platform. The Pontiac cars were, in ascending order, Tempest, Tempest Custom, and LeMans.

Replacing the previous “Trophy 4″ inline four-cylinder engine as standard equipment was a new 215 CID I-6 with 140 HP. This six was basically a smaller 3.75” bore version of the 230 CID Chevrolet I-6 but offered as a Pontiac exclusive. Optional engines included two versions of the 326 CID Pontiac V-8 introduced the previous year. One was a two-barrel 250 HP regular fuel option, the other was a 280 HP HO (“High Output”) V-8 with four-barrel carburetor and 10.5:1 compression ratio. Transmissions included a standard three-speed manual with column shift, four-speed manual with floor-mounted Hurst shifter or the two-speed automatic – a version of Buick’s Super Turbine 300.

GTO
The first Pontiac GTO began production September 3, 1963, and was available as an option package for the LeMans model. It was available in a 2-door post coupe (Sport Coupe) , 2-door hardtop, and convertible body styles. The $295.00 package included a 389 CID V-8 rated at 325 HP with a single Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, seven-blade clutch fan, a floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter, stiffer springs, larger diameter front sway bar, wider wheels with 7.50 × 14 redline tires, faux hood scoops, and special GTO badges.

Optional equipment included a four-speed manual transmission, Super Turbine 300 two-speed automatic transmission, a more powerful 348 HP engine with “Tri-Power” carburetion, limited-slip differential, heavy-duty cooling, ride and handling package as well as a tachometer mounted in the far right dial on the dash. Some limited power features were available, as well as other accessories. With every available option, the GTO cost about $4,500 and weighed around 3,500 lbs. The GTO package’s total sales were a surprising 32,450 units.

The Tempest and tempest Custom were now two separate models, identified as Series 20 and 21. Tempest LeMans was the luxury/sport series, numbered 23. The GTO would be a sub-series in the LeMans line.

The famous GTO (“Grand Turismo Omologato “) option package was released for the LeMans models only. The idea behind this package was to circumvent GM’s “10 pounds per CID per model” limit by offering the high performance 389 CID V-8 as an option in on the Series 22 LeMans Series. It was available on Models 2227 (Sports Coupe) 2237 (Hardtop Coupe) and 2267 (Convertible). It was not available on the Safari wagon. See the 1964 GTO Brochure HERE.
