1964 Pontiac Facts, Figures, and Specifications
1964 – Crisp Clean Lines Prevail
A new performance model option bowed in the Catalina line called the “2+2”. This option package was available on Catalina style numbers 2347 and 2367 at $291. The 2+2 would supplant the Grand Prix as the sport-performance option. Gone were the 421 CID Super Duty Engines – replaced at the top end by the Tri-Power 370 HP “HO 421”.

1964 Pontiac Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1964 Pontiac
Full sized Pontiacs were face lifted for 1964. They looked shorter but were about an inch longer overall. The term “Sport Coupe” was now used to identify the two-door hardtop body. The “Vista” – the term for a 4-door hardtop sedan, was phased out except for the Bonneville. The “Safari” nomenclature continued to be used to identify all station wagons.
2+2
The 2+2 debuted for the 1964 model year as a trim-only option for the Pontiac Catalina, with special door panels, bucket seats with a center console, and exterior badging. Pontiac marketed the 2+2 as the “big brother” to the popular Pontiac GTO. The suspension was stiffened with heavy-duty springs and a sway bar for improved handling mimicking the GTO approach.
Catalina, Star Chief, and Bonneville
The cars in these lines had their styling reshaped into a more crisp approach this year. Very little was changed in options – less the new 2+2 on the Catalina line. The 421 CID engines were still available, but not the Super Duty race versions with the top dog now the 370 HP “HO”. The Ventura trim package was still available as an interior decor option for Catalina models 2339 (4-door hardtop), 2347 (Sport Coupe) and 2367 (Convertible). The package dealt with the front bucket seats and the matching door trim.
Grand Prix
The 1964 Grand Prix received minor appearance changes. Those included a revised grille based on the 1964 Bonneville/Catalina, blacked out and simplified. New “GP” logos graced the fenders and rear deck trim with new taillights, still hidden. Revised upholstery trim highlighted the interior, still featuring “Morrokide” vinyl bucket seats and console as standard equipment.
Engine offerings were mostly unchanged from 1963 except that the standard 303 HP 389 CID four-barrel V8- gained 3 HP when equipped with the extra-cost Hydramatic transmission. The standard three-speed manual and optional Hydramatic transmissions were unchanged from 1963, however, a new GM-built Muncie four-speed available in either a wide-ratio M-20 or close-ratio M-21 options replaced the Borg-Warner T-10.

The Catalina 2+2 option was available on the Sport Coupe & Convertible with special interior door panels, bucket seats with a center console, and exterior badging. Critical in the 2+2 option was engine selection with the 265/286 HP 2-barrel standard and all higher horsepower 389s and 421s optional.
The 421 HO (High Output) was introduced in 1964 as Pontiac’s most powerful engine, replacing the 421 Super Duty as Pontiac had to discontinue their racing program after the GM board decided that all its divisions had to drop out of racing.
