1957 Corvette Fact Sheet

The Corvette Gets
Fuel Injection!
The big news was the availability of a 283 horsepower 283 cubic Inch fuel-injected V-8. Second in the news department, but just as significant, was the new 4-speed all synchromesh manual transmission.
General Year Information
The V-8 had a new displacement – 283 CID. But the big news was the availability of a 283 horsepower 283 cubic Inch fuel-injected V-8. Second in the news department was the availability of the 4-speed all synchromesh manual transmission. Like the “Competition” 240 HP ’56 Corvettes there was a special order package, RPO 579E for the “Fuelie”. Only 43 1957 Corvettes were equipped with that RPO 579E “Cold Air” fuel injected engine.
A 283 horsepower fuel injected 1957 Corvette could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds. From 0 to 100 miles per hour in 16.8 seconds. It had a top speed of 132 miles per hour.

As in 1956, though Corvette marketing still called the car a “Roadster”even though it was now a full convertible. Occupants were sealed from the outside elements by roll up windows and a true fold away convertible top. Of Course, the big news was the new V-8’s 283 CID and the availability of the 283 horsepower fuel-injected V-8. Second in the big news department was the availability of the 4-speed all synchromesh manual transmission.
Among the standard features were dual exhaust, all-vinyl bucket seats, three-spoke competition style steering wheel, carpeting, outside rear view mirror, electric clock and tachometer. The Corvette was now available in seven colors: Onyx Black; Polo White; Aztec Copper; Artie Blue; Cascade Green; Venetian Red or Silver . White, silver, and beige were optional color choices for the cove.
It should be noted that Zora Duntov’s influence was fully felt with the ’57 model. Aggressive power plants, special “Cold Air” Intake, racing suspension and brakes, were all available to Corvette owners by checking the order blank. Engine choices went from three to five – and two “Competition” engines were offered, one with two 4-barrel carburetors and one with Fuel Injection. The Fuel Injection version reached the magical “One HP per Cubic Inch” that all auto manufacturers coveted.

1957 Corvette
The 1957 Corvette was unchanged visually, however the V8 was increased to 283 CID. Fuel-injection, offered for the first time, was a very expensive option, and a 4-speed manual transmission became available after April 9, 1957. Fuel-injected models were in short supply, yet 1,040 were sold.
1956 vs 1957 Corvete Emblem placement
The only visible change to the trim versus 1956 and 1957 was the placement of the Corvette’s “crossed flags” from the model’s logo in the cove (left). The famous “Fuel Injection” logo would appear alongside if so equipped. The crossed flags would denote Chevrolet performance engines in all Chevrolet models going forward.
1957 Air Box V-8
The RPO 579E “Cold Air “V-8 option added fresh outside air (ribbed hose above) to the fuel mixture, increasing power, While rated at the same 283 HP as the standard “competition” Fuelie, most said the HP was about 290 or more. The large hose at the top of the image brings cold air to the rear brakes.
1957 Fuelie V8 Cutaway Side 3qtr 1XA
The “Competition” version of the 1957 Corvette Fuel Injected V-8 made the magical one horsepower per cubic inch – 283 HP! The engine was made available in full-size Chevrolets as well

Note there was both ram tuning and “straight shot” path to the intake valves designed into the fuel Injection manifold. These features, in addition to the port-based fuel delivery, built HP at medium to high RPM – 283 @ 6200 RPM in the competition version.
