1971 Plymouth Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1971 Plymouth Mid-Size Car
In 1971, the coupe bodywork was completely changed to a more rounded “fuselage” design in keeping with then-current Chrysler styling trends, including a steeply raked windshield, hidden cowl, and deeply inset grille and headlights. In a departure from previous thinking, the B-Body two-door bodies shared little sheet metal, glass, or trim with the four-door bodies. The convertible was canceled. Unlike previous years, 4-door sedans and 2-door coupes did not share sheet metal and each carried unique styling. 2-door coupes had a wheelbase of 115 inches, while 4-door sedans, as well as station wagons, had a wheelbase of 117 inches. Two-door models had a loop-type front bumper, while 4-door models and station wagons had a more traditional setup.
The interiors could be ordered with 6-way power leather seats, thick deep-pile carpeting, and additional sound-proofing was installed in all performance models. Air conditioning and power steering could be had, except on the 426 CID Hemi V-8.
Engines
Emission restrictions such as lower compression ratios and faster-acting choke operation lowered the base 440 output by 5 HP to 370 HP. The 440 Six Pack was down to 385 HP, but the Hemi was still rated at 425 HP. Due partly to rising insurance rates on muscle cars, sales dropped to fewer than 3,000 units in 1971 (2,942), and only 30 cars were equipped with the Hemi engine, which was discontinued after this year.
Satellite
Satellite models consisted of a base line with coupe 4-door sedan and wagon, Satellite Custom that was limited to the 4-door and wagons, Satellite Sebring, a coupe only, Satellite Brougham 4-door sedan, Satellite Regent Wagons, and Satellite Sebring Plus. The Brougham, Regent and Sebring Plus were only V-8 equipped. Engine choices were for the Satellite were the 225 CID I-6, the 318 CID V-8 and the 383 CID V-8, with the Satellite Sebring having an optional engine choice of the 340 CID V-8.
Road Runner
The Road Runner was only offered as a coupe. The interiors could be ordered with 6-way power leather seats, thick deep-pile carpeting, and additional sound-proofing was installed. Air conditioning and power steering could be had, except on the Hemi. 1971 was a high-water year for the ride and handling for the Road Runner. The overall length was increased, but the wheelbase was shortened an inch. It also saw the introduction of the 340 4-BBL option and a detuned 383 “Road Runner” engine with 8.7:1 compression and power dropping to 300 HP. Road Runners with the 340 and 383 engines received a standard insurance rating.
GTX
Like the Road Runner, the GTX was only offered as a coupe. This was the final year for the GTX as a stand-alone model. The convertible body style was dropped. The interiors could be ordered with 6-way power leather seats, thick deep-pile carpeting, and additional sound-proofing was installed. Air conditioning and power steering could be had, except on the 426 CID Hemi V-8.
