1963 Ford Falcon Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1963 Ford Falcon Facts

NOTE:  The Ford Econoline, Ranchero, and Sedan Delivery are considered a truck and are not covered here.

After the restyle of 1962, the 1963 Falcon was little changed externally. The 1962 front fascia and tail lights were redone to give it a slightly more aggressive look – with a new convex grille featuring a horizontal grid, and more bold use of chrome. The hood continued with the chrome trim piece that implied a scoop..  The 4-speed transmission offered in the last half of 1962 continued as an option. At the outset, only the 85 and 101 HP I-6 engines were available. Later, the 260 CID V-8 would arrive. Most options and accessories were carryovers from 1962 with only minor changes.

The good news was that even more models were available. These included a four-door Futura a Deluxe wagon, a Futura Convertible and a Futura Sports fastback hardtop. These two body styles were available in the Futura series and would be the mainstay of the new V-8-powered Sprint series introduced in late January 1963. The Sprint coupe model used the fastback roof line, the Fairlane’s 164 HP “Challenger” 260-CID V-8 engine, and heavy duty suspension, as well as the Futura model’s bucket seats and other interior pieces. Unique as standard was a dash-mounted tachometer (available as an option on other Falcons), and a Sport steering wheel..

This was the first time a V-8 option was available in the Falcon. It should be noted that while the Sprint received the V-8 as standard, all other Falcons could receive it as an option. (Incidentally, when the Sprint was first announced, the 101 HP I-6 was denoted as the base engine, but this was quickly killed). The Sprint was produced in very limited numbers – the Sprint two-door hardtop with 10,479 produced and Sprint convertible with 4,602 produced.

NOTE 1: Few know that the 260 V-8, while hyped in the Falcon Sprint, was available in any and all Falcon models when introduced in February 1963. we don’t have production figures for where the V-8 appeared in other models, but it is known that even Squire wagons were so equipped. Obviously a drag racer would have chosen the Low level Falcon 2-door sedan for the 260 due it it’s light weight.

NOTE 2: The Monte Carlo Rally Falcon sprints were equipped with the 260 CID Cobra V-8, essential little known and identical to the 271 Hi-Po 289 released in 1964.  They were modified by Holman Moody and likely produced over 300 HP. Shelby’s “Competition” 260 CID V-8s were used in race Cobras in 1963 – making the same power.

NOTE 3: It should be noted that these first-generation Falcon Sprint models were secretly the basis for the 1964½ Mustangs that would be released by Ford one year later. In simplest terms, the 1963½ Falcon Sprint is nearly mechanically identical to the 1964½ Mustang, while being stylistically different.

1963 Ford Falcon Facts Specifications Information DataThis would be the first year the Windsor V-8 in the Ford Falcon.  It was the 260 CID  2-Barrel 164 HP version. Offered beginning January 21, 1963, few know it was available across the board – including the station wagon. Of course, it gained notoriety in the famous Sprint, but any Falcon could be so equipped.

1963 Ford Falcon Facts Specifications Information Data
Few know that initially the Sprint option did not include the V-8 unless ordered as such. The Sprint option included HD suspension, 4-speed manual transmission, sports steering wheel, Futura interior with bucket seats and tachometer, but at first came standard with the 101 HP I-6!  After January 21, 1963,  Sprint models were all V-8s and received the “V-8” logo next to “Sprint”.

1963 Ford Falcon Facts Specifications Information DataThe fastback design roof line was new and available on the Futura and Sprint. It was designed to emulate the fastback roof line of the full size Ford.  The convertible also appeared in those same two lines. it should be noted that the fastback hardtop was not necessarily a Sprint AND that it could be had with the 85 HP I-6 as standard with the 101 HP six optional.

Falcon Standard – Falcon Standard series cars were the base trim level for 1963 and included chrome windshield and rear window moldings, two horns, two sun visors, arm rests on the front doors only, and a horn button instead of a chrome horn ring.

Standard models were 2-door Sedan and 4-door Sedan.

Futura – The Futura series was the top trim level for 1963 and included a chrome horn ring; rear arm rests and ash trays, two horns, Futura wheel covers instead of hub caps, the round “Futura” symbol on the top C-pillar, chrome side window moldings, chrome windshield and rear window moldings, a horizontal chrome strip between the tail lights, and a horizontal arrow style chrome strip on the body side. The Sport Coupe also included wire wheel covers and bucket seats.

Futura models were 2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop, and Convertible. The 2-door Sedan, hardtop and Convertible were available with bench or bucket seats.

NOTE:  while the Sprint model was essentially a Futura, it carried its own designation (Surprisingly “RPO”). We have listed it as as separate model.

Sprint – The Sprint came standard with heavy duty suspension, sport steering wheel, tachometer, and bucket seats, rear arm rests and ash trays, two horns, “Sprint” and “V-8” emblems on the front of the fenders, wire wheel covers instead of hub caps, chrome side window moldings, chrome windshield and rear window moldings, a horizontal chrome strip between the tail lights and a horizontal arrow style chrome strip on the body side. All Sprint models were V-8 powered.

Sprint models were 2-door fastback Hardtop and Convertible.

Station Wagons – Station Wagons were considered a separate series by Ford.  Base wagons were trimmed as a Standard Falcon; Deluxe wagons were trimmed more like a Futura; and Squire wagons were trimmed as a Futura and received faux wood side panels. After January 21, 1963, wagons could be equipped with the 260 V-8.

Wagon models were 2-door 6-passenger and 4-door 6 passenger, Standard, Deluxe and Squire.  A 4-door Squire wagon could be equipped with bucket seats and carried a separate body designation, 71D.

NOTE: In the 1963 year, station wagon production numbers were included in the 2-door and 4-door sedan production totals. No breakout is currently available.
