1959 Dodge Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1959 Dodge

NOTE: All Dodge hardtops and convertibles have the name “Lancer” attached to their model name. A Custom Royal 2-door hardtop is named “Custom Royal Lancer”, while the 4-door sedan is just “Custom Royal”.

The styling of the 1959 Dodge models was simply exaggerated an exaggerated version of the 1957-1958 models. The fins were longer and higher, the brows over the headlights were much larger and the entire car was longer, lower and wider than in previous years. This year’s offering in the high-horsepower category was the first use of the famous 383 CID V-8. The 383 boasted 345 horsepower. Also new, for 1959, was the Swivel-Seat option. A simple motion of the lever, at the side of the seat, and the unit swung out to meet the occupant.

D-500 Option
The D-500 was now a performance engine package, available on all V-8 models, including wagons. The package used the 383 CID wedge V-8 with two ratings: 320 HP with single 4-narrel carburetor  – the standard engine. The optional engine was a 383 with dual 4-barrel carburetors and 345 HP.

Other Powerplants
There were three other V-8s offered. The base 326 CID “Poly” head. It was an over-bored 318 fitted with a 2-barrel carburetor and producing 255 HP. Next up was a 361 CID wedge head with a 2-barrel carburetor and making 295 HP. Last, was a 361 using a 4-barrel and having 305 HP. The venerable L-Head I-6 was the base engine in the Coronet line only and made 135 horsepower. The 350 CID V-8 was discontinued.

Model Lines
The line was  broken down into Coronet six, Coronet V-8, Royal, and Custom Royal, with Suburban, Sierra, and Custom Sierra wagons.

Historical
Model year production peaked at 151,851 units, of which approximately 15,600 were Sixes and 136,200 were V-8 powered. Dodge assembled 13,515 two-door sedans, 65,752 four-door sedans, 29,610 two-door hardtops, 16.704 four-door hardtops, 2.733 convertibles, 13,515 four-door two-seat station wagons, and 10,022 four-door three-seat station wagons.

For the model run, about 94 percent of all Dodges had automatic transmission, 68.9 percent had power steering, 27.4 percent had power brakes,, 4.5 percent had air conditioning and only 0.7 percent had the rare air suspension, an option that did not last very long.

The D-500 Option received the 383 CID wedge V-8 in single 4-barrel carburetor 320 HP and dual 4-barrel 345 HP versions. The option was the engine only with other performance parts and pieces as add-ins. It was available as an option on all V-8 models including station wagons.

1959 Dodge Facts Specifications Information DataSwivel bucket seats were a new option and allowed easier access to the passengers. They could be ordered for right or left seats or for both, at $71 each.

This year, the 4-door Hardtop received a new rear window, with a larger wraparound area. It aided rear vision , in response to complaints from some customers.
