1962 Ford Thunderbird Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1962 Ford Thunderbird

Except for minor exterior trim changes, the 1962 Thunderbirds were identical to the 1961 version.

New Models Offered

Landau
The new Landau hardtop featured a vinyl top as standard equipment and decorative “S” bars on the C Pillar. It was the first time such a top was offered on the Thunderbird line.

Sports Roadster
Also new for 1962, was the Sports Roadster. It was an attempt to bring back the sporty appearance of the old two-seat T-Birds. This was accomplished by offering the Thunderbird •convertible with a fiberglass tonneau cover for the back seats. The cover included two streamlined headrests that seemed attached to the front bucket seats when in place. The option contributed to a sleek looking car when the top was down.

The standard engine was the 300 HP 390 CID V-8, but now a 390 CID “M” series engine was a new option for 1962. This 340 HP version sported three 2-barrel carburetors and was essentially a redesign of the unit offered on the 405 HP 406 CID Ford Galaxie V-8 redone so as to be compatible with the Thunderbird’s automatic transmission.

Historical
The new Thunderbirds were introduced October 12, 1961. 75,536 Thunderbirds were built this year.

1962 Ford Thunderbird Facts Specifications Information DataThe triple two barrel M Series V-8 was a new option tied to the introduction of the Sports Roadster, but an option on all models. Other than the carburetors and an increase in compression ratio from 9.6:1 to 10.5:1, no other changes were made to the engine.

The Sports Roadster was considered a separate model by Ford, but aside from the cover and wire wheels, it was no different from the standard convertible.  The 340 HP triple carb V-8 was an option.

The Landau model was truly just an exterior styling twist. The top covering was only available in black or white.
