1958 Plymouth Mid-Size Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1958 Plymouth

Styling was a continuation of the 1957 models, with the major noticeable detail the replacement of the parking light in the side by side front lighting with the new high beam unit. The new 350 CID Golden Commando engine was optional on any Plymouth Plaza, Savoy, Belvedere, Suburban, and Fury, as was the dual four-barrel 318 CID “V-800 Dual Fury”.  All other 318 V-8s were called “V-800s”.

Fury
The Fury continued as Belvedere sub-series containing only the high-performance sport coupe. In 1958, the optional engine was the new “B Series” 350 CID wedge combustion chamber V-8. It was called “Golden Commando” and was equipped with two four-barrel carburetors and produced 305 HP. A 315 HP electronic fuel injection option was available. The EFI engine utilized the “Bendix Electrojector” system. All EFI equipped cars were Furys, which were first built with the “Dual Fury” carburetor setup, and were then converted to fuel injection on a special assembly line in the DeSoto factory. (Learn about the “Electrojector” system HERE). Cars with this option were later recalled due to unreliable operation and were reconverted to the “Dual Fury” configuration.  The 350 CID Golden Commando engine was optional on any Plymouth Plaza, Savoy, Belvedere, Suburban, and Fury, as was the dual four-barrel 318 CID “V-800 Dual Fury”. All other 318 V-8s were called “V-800s”.

Belvedere
The Belvedere would once again return as a top-level trim for 1958 . And this would be the last time it would have this distinction. Styling was a continuation of the 1957 models. .

Savoy
The Savoy models played their traditional role as mid-priced Plymouth models and the Custom Suburbans were the comparable offerings in the Suburban Series. Finger-shaped “Sport Tone'” treatment was a $20 option on passenger car models and $24 extra on station wagons.

Plaza
Known as Plymouth’s “Price Leader”, in 1958 the Plaza offered buyers the widest choice of options to date. Options formerly reserved only for higher priced lines were available on the Plaza for the first time in history. The Business Coupe, which was the least produced model of Plymouth in 1958  with 1,472 units, differed from the regular 2dr Club Sedan in that the rear seat was an optional accessory. Plymouth also added a special edition to the Plaza fleet in ’58.

Silver Special
In the Spring, a special “Silver Savoy Special” was advertised. It was available as either a Savoy or Plaza club sedan  It was a club sedan with special sport toning – front door and fender spears, metallic silver roof and wheels. It also had a short stainless steel spear that accented the front fenders and extended partially into the front doors. The final touch was on the rear fins where the Silver Special bore “Forward Look” emblems instead of the traditional  model designation in script. It is isn’t known how many cars were fitted with the Silver Special trim package, but they are known to be very rare cars.

Plaza & Suburban –  Plaza was the low-priced line. The DeLuxe Suburban was the counterpart station wagon. Plaza and DeLuxe Suburban models could be identified by rear fender nameplates. Normal side trim consisted of a straight sweep spear molding extending from the rear bumper to nearly across the front door. A molding arrangement forming a bullet-shaped side body cove with a contrasting finish was optional at slight extra cost. Basic equipment on the Plaza included directional signals, dual headlights, single-speed electric windshield wipers, left-hand sun visor, dual horns, five tubeless tires, bumper jack and wheel lug wrench. Gold V-shaped emblems at the center of the grille were used to identify models with V-8 power.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 2-door Club Sedan, 2-door Business Coupe,  2-door and 4-door Deluxe Suburban wagons.

Savoy & Custom Suburban – The Savoy  was the mid-priced Plymouth model and the Custom Suburbans were the comparable offerings in the wagon Series. Equipment for these models included all Plaza features, plus Air Foam (foam rubber) seat cushions; arm rests, horn-blowing steering wheel ring, dual sun visors, and slightly enriched upholstery combinations. Identification included model nameplates on rear fenders and front fender top ornaments. Standard body side trim was a full-length, single horizontal molding running from headlights to taillights. Finger-shaped “Sport Tone” trim was $20 option on passenger car models and $24 on station wagons. This trim the molding ran from the rear bumper to nearly the front edge of the front door, then looped back, along the doors and quarters, dropping down to the rocker sill just ahead of the rear wheel opening. The area within the moldings was painted a contrasting color, which usually matched that of the roof. In the Spring, a special Silver Savoy Special was marketed. It was a club sedan with a special Sport Tone, front door and fender spears, metallic silver roof and wheels, turn signals, electric wipers and washers, and a price tag of $1,958.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 4-door Hardtop Sedan, 2-door Club Sedan, 2-door Sport Coupe hardtop, and 2-door and 4-door Custom Suburban wagons with the 4-door Custom Suburban available in 6- and 9-passenger versions.

Belvedere & Sport Suburban – Belvedere represented the top full-line Plymouth series. The Sport Suburban was the comparable station wagon. Nameplates on the rear fender identified the car. The standard type of Belvedere side trim was a single, full-length horizontal molding of slightly distinctive design. Running with a slight downward slant, it moved from headlamp level, in the front, towards the back fender. About a foot ahead of the taillights, the molding angled up towards the top of the fin. When optional “Sport Tone” finish was added, a lower molding was added. It ran from above the back bumper and tapered towards the upper molding at the front fender tip. The area inside the moldings was then finished with contrasting colors, usually matching the roof. Belvedere and Sport Suburban models had all Savoy features, plus full wheel covers, rear fender stone shields, electric clock, lockable glove box, cigar lighter, oil filter, and front fender top ornaments.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 4-door Sport Sedan hardtop, 2-door Club Sedan, 2-door Sport Coupe hardtop, Convertible, and 4-door Sport Suburban wagons in 6- and 9-passenger configurations.

Fury – The Fury was a limited-edition Buckskin Beige two-door hardtop that while sold as a distinct model, was considered a Belvedere. It had  Fury rear fender nameplates, “Sport Tone” moldings with gold anodized aluminum inserts,, bumper wing guards, padded interior, front and rear foam seats, backup lights, dual outside rear view mirrors, and “Golden Commando V-8” nameplates, up-swept front bumper end extensions, safety padded dash, padded sun visors, foam seat front and rear, special clock, backup lights, directional signals, and a 290 horsepower 318 CID V-8 all standard.

The Fury was available as a two-door hardtop only.
