1954 Lincoln Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1954 Lincoln
Lincolns grew slightly in length this year. The Lincoln name was now written on the front fenders. The wide, slanted rear fender chrome piece was replaced by a rear fender stone shield. The straight, side molding was higher and longer than that used on the 1953s. The Lincoln logo, and a large “V” were on the face of the hood. The top bumper/grille bar was straight rather than having a dip in the middle, giving an illusion of greater width.
The 317 CID V-8 was unchanged in horsepower and torque, though there were improvements in the hydraulic lifters and the carburetor for quieter operation and smoother acceleration. Lincoln continued to use GM’s Hydra-Matic automatic transmission after the late year hiatus when GM’s plant fire halter production. This indecent did get Lincoln to speed the development of their own automatic transmission that would appear in 1955.
Historical
Once again, Lincoln was successful in the famous Pan-American Road Race, placing first and second. Though the V-8 engine was smaller and lighter than its competition from Chrysler and Cadillac – and though it was rated at 25-30 HP less, it’s factory HP was under-rated and it hauled a car 300-400 less heavy than its competition. Sales were up solidly in the Capri line, but down drastically in the Custom line – resulting in an almost 4,000 unit drop in total deliveries.

Lincoln brakes were increased in size by one full inch. The lively performance and nimble handling warranted better brakes and the factory complied.
Other makes in the luxury fields began to offer air conditioning, but Lincoln management felt it was not a selling point. The drop in sales of the less expensive Custom line sent a message that if Lincoln wanted to compete this would be important in the coming years.
