1970 Mercury Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1970 Mercury Mid-Size Car

The Mercury mid-size cars grew in wheelbase and overall length, with the 3- and 4-doors at 117 inches and the wagons at 114 inches. The bodies were completely redesigned with much more smooth lines that gave the appearance of being lower, and they were – by about one inch. The Convertible was gone. The protruding hood Mercury had been using for the past few years was extended this year.  In the Cyclone line, the “CJ” as part of the model name was dropped from the Cyclone lineup and applied to various engine names in the series. The line now featured the Cyclone, Cyclone Spoiler and Cyclone GT. The Cyclone and Cyclone Spoiler models were fitted with 429 CID V-8 engines. The Cyclone GT received the 250 HP 351 CID 2-barrel as standard.

Cyclone Engines
The standard engine for the base Cyclone was the 429 CID four-barrel “Thunderjet” with dual exhaust, rated at 360 HP. Three optional engines were available. The 429 Cobra Jet was a 429 CID four-barrel with dual exhaust but without the Ram Air induction, rated at 370 HP. There was a Ram air version rated the same. The last was the 429 CID “Super Cobra Jet”, which was part of the Drag Pack option. It was also 429 CID with a 780 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, Ram Air induction, and a more aggressive camshaft rated at 375 HP.

Cyclone Models
Cyclone – The base Cyclone had the plainest exterior treatment and also featured a bench seat and what would have been more like a Comet interior were a Comet available. The 360 HP 429, 4-speed transmission, handling package. and G70 x 14 tires were standard. All other performance and interior upgrades were optional, but available.

Cyclone Spoiler – The Cyclone Spoiler was an upgrade and featured front and rear spoilers, black or white racing stripes, an integrated functional hood scoop for ram air induction, 140 mph speedometer with four engine monitoring gauges that included an 8,000 RPM tachometer with adjustable red line, vinyl bucket seats, dual racing mirrors and a competition suspension package. The 429 Cobra Jet with Ram Air was the standard engine for the Cyclone Spoiler, with the 429 Super Cobra Jet with Drag Pak and Super Drag Pak optional. The Super Cobra Jet upgraded the block to four main bolts and provided a mechanical flat-tappet camshaft, and the carburetor was changed from a Rochester Quadra-Jet to a 780 CFM Holley. Standard with the SCJ was the Drag Pack, this package added a front-mounted engine oil cooler and a 3.91 ratio gear, while the Super Drag Pack offered a 4.30 ratio gear and a Detroit Locker differential. Colors for the Spoiler were limited to Competition Yellow, Competition Blue, pastel blue, Competition Gold, Competition Green and Competition Orange. NOTE: Ford had intended to continue the Spoiler II option for 1970 with an even more aggressive nose profile. One prototype was built.

Cyclone GT – For those that placed more emphasis in style than speed, there was the Cyclone GT. The basic package offered comfort weave bucket seats, full-length console, twin racing mirrors, integrated hood scoop that could be made functional for optional ram air induction, hide-away headlights, three pod tail lights and unique lower-body line trim. The small block 351 Cleveland with 2-barrel carburetor and a three-speed manual transmission was standard. The engine upgrades included the 4-barrel Cleveland small block followed all the 429 CID big blocks up to the Super Cobra Jet and the Drag Pak plus a four-speed transmission and a selection of automatic transmissions. (Our early sales literature shows the BOSS 429 as an option, none were actually built). An oddity with the GT was the Action Special Equipment Package that included deluxe wheel covers, white sidewall tires, a vinyl roof, and most notably a bench seat replacing the standard bucket seats.

Montego
For 1970, the Montego underwent a revision, with the Mercury mid-size range dropping the Comet name entirely. The sedan and wagon chassis gained an inch of wheelbase. The front fascia was styled with a forward-thrusting grille and hood with concealed headlamps on MX Brougham trim. The convertible was dropped from the model range, with the two-door hardtop adopting a new and sleeker roofline. Following the introduction of exterior wood-panel trim for Montego station wagons in 1969, for 1970 Mercury added the Montego MX Villager wagon serving as the equivalent of the MX Brougham model.

Montego Engines
The V-8 engine lineup was revised, dropping the 390 and 428 V-8s in favor of the newer 429 CID unit with 360 HP, the higher-performance versions were reserved for Mercury Cyclones. The 351 Windsor V-8 was replaced with Cleveland “canted valve” V-8 of the same displacement.

Historical
Mercurys won four NASCAR Grand National races in 1970.

The new performance engine was now the canted valve 429 CID V-8 introduced in the 1968 Thunderbird. The base version was the 429 CID four-barrel “Thunderjet” rated at 360 HP. Then there was the 429 Cobra Jet – a 429 CID four-barrel without the Ram Air induction, rated at 370 HP as well as  a Ram air version rated the same. The last was the 429 CID “Super Cobra Jet”, which was part of the Drag Pack option.

1970 Mercury Cougar Facts Specifications Information DataThe new “canted valve” 351 CID Cleveland V-8 replaced the Wedge head Windsor in the line. It was available in 250 HP 2-barrel and 300 HP 4-barrel form.

The protruding hood Mercury had been using for the past few years was dramatically extended in 1970. While surprising, it did make the car look lower and wider, though this was not the case.

For this one year, the Comet nameplate disappeared with the Montego 2- and 4-door models taking on the entry-level mid-size position.
