1954 Buick Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1954 Buick Facts
Small styling changes were featured in the 1954 Buick models. The Special had a new body for 1954, lower and wider, on a new V-8-powered chassis. The new Century, revived for the first time since 1942, shared the Series 40 Special body and basic chassis, but used the 200 HP Roadmaster V-8. Stainless Sweepspears on the body sides arched over the rectangular rear wheelhouses of the sedans or station wagons and the rounded rear wheel opening of the Riviera hardtop and convertible. Rear fenders had a blunted fin at their rear edge, with dual ‘bullet’ taillamps below. A new Panoramic windshield, with slanting side pillars was used.
Skylark Custom Convertible
The Skylark returned in 1954 with new styling unique to the Buick line. This included wheel cutouts that could be painted in a contrasting color to the body’s. The trunk was sloped into a semi-barrel, and tail lights moved to large, chromed fins projecting atop the rear fenders. Re-designated Buick Skylark Model 100, the car was based on the all-new shorter Century/Special series 40 chassis and not the larger series 60 Roadmaster/Super chassis, also all-new for 1954. Once again, all Skylarks were built as 2-door convertibles and carried the same luxury equipment as before. Smaller and lighter, the Skylark also received a performance boost by retaining the 322 CID V-8, now at 200 HP.
Sales were small, reflecting the Skylark’s continued high price of $4,843, with only 836 being manufactured. It was and did, however, add to the line’s prestige and image.
Buick Roadmaster
For the 1954 model year, the Buick Roadmaster shared with Cadillac and Oldsmobile 98 the new General Motors C-body. These were large, roomy cars, as much as 5.50 inches longer in wheelbase and more than nine inches longer overall than in 1953. Roadmaster script was placed on the rear quarter panels and within the rear deck ornament. Roadmaster’s engine output was increased to 200 HP, while the pillared coupe and the Estate wagon were no longer offered as body styles. Air conditioning was provided by Frigidaire optionally on sedans and hardtops, which consisted of a self-contained unit that was retrofitted at the customers’ request.
Buick Super
Using the new longer General Motors C-body, with vertical windshield pillars and the new “Panoramic” curved windshield, the Super for 1954 was a big Buick for the budget minded buyer. Identified by its three Ventiports per fender and the “Super” script on the quarters. The Super shared other bright work with the Roadmaster. Interiors were nylon and were plainer than in the Roadmaster.
Buick Century
Buick reintroduced the Century using the original formula of mating the smaller, lighter Buick Special body to its largest and most powerful 322 CID OHV V-8 engine mated with either Dynaflow automatic transmission or a 3-speed manual box. The intent was to give Buick a performance vehicle. Included in the model lineup was the only station wagon model.
Buick Special
Significant in the Special for this year was the introduction of the OHV V-8 in the line and a new body shell. The engine was the same block as the senior Series cars however; it used a smaller 3.625 inch bore to reach 264 CID versus the upscale 322 inch older brother.
Historical
Model year production was 444,609 units. During 1954, Buick became the first automaker to build one-half million hardtops. The two millionth Dynaflow was built on May 3.

- Special Line Gets New Smaller V-8
Buick’s prestige convertible was the only model in this series. A new tapered deck with big chrome fins was now grafted onto the shorter wheelbase 1954 Century body to create the new car. Lighter weight and 200 HP added to the performance.
Revived for the first time since 1942, the new Century shared the smaller and lighter Series 40 Special body and basic chassis but used the Roadmaster’s 200 HP V-8. It was Buick’s performance model.

A new piston crown better filled the combustion chamber and stopped the tendency of the engine to knock at low RPM and load. It also increased the power potential.

A smaller bore of 3.625 inches on the Buick V-8 produced a Special engine of 264 cubic inches. It was a welcome addition to the line that had relied on an I-8 designed in the 1930s.
