1954 Ford – A New OHV V-8 Arrives!

The big news was the introduction of a new V-8 engine, with overhead valves. This new engine was rated at 130 horsepower, or nearly 25 percent more than the 1953 L-Head V-8.  Power windows, four-way power seats and power brakes were new along with ball joints that replaced kingpins in the front suspension.

1954 Ford Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1954 Ford Cars

Ford models utilized the 1952-1953 bodies with moderate trim updating. The grille incorporated a large horizontal bar with large slots on either side of a centrally located spinner. Round parking lights were located at either end of the horizontal bar.

Many new convenience options were added for 1954. Among them, were power windows, four-way power seats and power brakes. Ball joints replaced kingpins in the front suspension. The big news was a new V-8 engine, with overhead valves. This new engine was rated at 130 horsepower, or nearly 25 percent more than the 1953 L-Head V-8.

Crestline
For 1954 the Crestline was updated with minor styling and trim changes. A Fordor Sedan and Skyliner were added, with the Skyliner a 2-door hardtop with a tinted acrylic glass panel in the front section of the roof. 13,144 Skyliners were sold in the single year of production, more than the two years of Crown Victoria Skyliner production that would follow. Many learned that before air conditioning, the sun made the interior uncomfortable in the Summer months.

Customline
The 1954 Customline models used the 1952-53 bodies with only minor changes. The Customline range now included a new 2-door Ranch Wagon. 1954 Customline production totaled 674,295 units.

Mainline
The 1954 mainline models used the 1952-53 bodies with only minor changes.

Powerplants
The I-6 engine now displaced 223 cubic inches and was rated at 115 HP, and the New V-8 239 cubic inches and made 130 HP. A “Police” optional V-8 was the 256 cubic inch Mercury OHV V-8, rated at 160 HP.

Notes
Three new models, Crestline Skyliner, Crestline Sunliner and Ranch Wagon were introduced. The Ranch Wagon was a two-door station wagon in the Mainline series but now had Customline appearance features. The Customline two door sedan with short top was the Club Coupe. The Customline four-door station wagon was the Country, Sedan. The Crestline four-door station wagon with wood grained trim was the Country Squire. The Victoria was a Crestline two-door pillarless hardtop. The Skyliner was a Crestline two-door pillarless hardtop with green tinted plastic insert in roof over front seat. The Sunliner was the Crestline convertible.

Historical
Of the total 1,165,942 Fords built in the 1954 calendar year, industry sources estimate that about 863 thousand had V-8 engines installed.

The Skyliner, a 2-door hardtop with a tinted acrylic glass panel in the front section of the roof was an all-new model. 13,144 Skyliners were sold in this single year of production!


Ball joints replaced kingpins in the front suspension. The new configuration aided in better front suspension geometry, adjustability, and longevity.

Power Windows and a Power Front Seat  were new this year. Power Windows were not available on Mainline models.

The Mainline series was the base trim level for 1954 and included rubber window moldings, horn button instead of horn ring, one sun visor and an arm rest only on the driver’s door.

Mainline modes were: 2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, 2-door business coupe, and 2-door Ranch Wagon.

The Customline series was the intermediate trim level for 1954 and included chrome window moldings, chrome half-horn ring, two sun visors, arm rests on all doors, passenger assist straps on interior “8” pillars for easier rear seat egress. On the exterior, a horizontal chrome strip along the entire length of the body and a chrome stone shield was placed near the bottom of the rear quarter panels.

Customline models were the 2-door Club Coupe, Tudor Sedan, Fordor Sedan, 2-door Deluxe Ranch Wagon and 4-door Country Sedan Wagon.

The Crestline series was the top trim level for 1954, and included a six-cylinder engine for the first time since the series began in 1950. This series included all the Customline trim, plus three chrome hash marks behind the quarter panel stone shields, chrome “A” pillar moldings, additional chrome trim along the bottom of the side windows and wheel covers.

Crestline models were  4-door sedans, 2-door Victoria Hardtop, the Skyliner (plexiglass roof),  the Sunliner Convertible, and the Country Squire Wagon.
