General Year Information – 1967 Mercury Mid-Size Car
Beginning with the 1967 model year, the Comet name was used only on the base Comet 202 model, available only in two-or four-door sedan body styles. Other models were now referred to by what had previously been their sub-series names – Comet 202, Capri, Caliente, Cyclone, and Cyclone GT models, and the Voyager and simulated wood-paneled Villager station wagon models.
For the most part, except for trim changes, the cars were identical to the 1966 models. However the engine choices were changed. The I-6 remained at 200 CID and and was unchanged. The base 289 CID V-8 also was as in 1966, but the 390 base V-8 was rerated to 270 HP. The Cyclone 390 CID V-8 was also rerated at 320 HP. It is said that the original rating of 335 HP had been optimistic, based upon street performance. The 265 HP 390 CID V-8 was retired.
A total of 3,419 Cyclone hardtops and 378 Convertibles were sold with the GT performance package.
W and R-Code Comets
In 1967, the Comet was offered in very limited numbers with the famed 427 cubic inch FE “side-oiler” V-8 engine, either as a single 4-barrel W-code with 410 HP or a dual-4-barrel “R” code with 425 HP. They were similar to those offered in the Ford Fairlane. Only 60 cars were produced, with 51 with the “R” code and nine with the W-code 427. Six of those were Capri models and four were Caliente models, with no convertibles. Only one W-code equipped car was a Capri, which makes it the rarest Mercury ever. All 427-powered Comets were equipped with a 4-speed Top loader transmission, a 9-inch rear end with 3.89:1 gears, and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. Mercury also lightened these cars by removing the sound deadening (saving about 150 pounds) in an effort to increase performance. Some cars also had the battery relocated to the trunk to move more weight over the rear wheels and increase traction, which also improved performance for drag racing.
Historical
Three of the most popular Comet options were automatic transmission (82.4 percent), V-8 engine (67.4 percent) and power steering (49.6 percent).

The 390 CID FE block introduced in 1966 was exactly the same in specifications as the previous year, but the HP in both cases was was shown as reduced – 320 for the GT and 270 for the optional 2-barrel engine. This reduction was, for the most part, an acceptance that the previous year’s engines were over-rated.

In response to GM and Chrysler placing their highest performance big blocks in their mid-size cars, both Ford and Mercury made the famous “side-oiler” 427 CID engine available in their intermediate. For Mercury, 60 were produced (50 were necessary to race in NHRA). Of the 60, 51 had the “R” code and 9 had the single 4-barrel W-code 427.

Comet 202– Comet styling was close to that of the Ford Fairlane it was based on. The horizontal grille, with a vertical piece in the center, was framed by stacks of two headlights on each fender. The sides were clean, except for a ‘202’ nameplate on the front fenders. The vertical taillights were on the ends of the rear fenders. About the only extras not optional on the ‘202’ were a dome light and a cigarette lighter.
The Comet 202 was only available as a 2-door Sedan and 4-door Sedan.
Capri – The Capri had nearly full-length, mid-body side moldings and nameplates on the rear quarter panel. Vinyl and fabric or all-vinyl upholstery, deep-loop carpeting and rear armrests were among standard features.
The Capri was available as a 4-door sedan and 2-door hardtop coupe.
Caliente – Caliente models had bright fender ornaments, rocker panel and wheel openings moldings and full-length upper-body pinstripes. These set the Caliente apart from other models. Its interior featured wood grained dash and door panels, luxury armrests and paddle-type door handles.
The Caliente was available as a 2-door hardtop, 4-door sedan, convertible.
Cyclone– The Cyclone looked similar to the Caliente, less the fender ornaments. Its grille had fewer horizontal pieces. The rear deck panel was blacked-out and the word Cyclone was spelled out on it. Bucket seats and all-vinyl upholstery were standard.
The Cyclone was available as a 2-door Hardtop, and Convertible.
Cyclone GT – The Cyclone GT was part of the Cyclone Line with a special front fender nameplate, body strips above the rocker panels and a different, horizontal bar grille. Bucket seats and chromed wheels were standard along with the 390 CID “FE”” V-8. . A “GT” or “GTA” was found on the lower rocker panel stripe whether manual or automatic transmission were ordered.
The Cyclone GT was available as a 2-door Hardtop and Convertible.
Station Wagons– The Voyager wagon had a distinctive elongated U-shaped chrome piece on its front fenders. The Villager featured wood grained side and tailgate panels. It came with crinkle vinyl upholstery and a dual-action tailgate.
The Voyager was trimmed as a Comet, and the Villager was trimmed much like a Caliente.
