1970 Pontiac Grand Prix –
Moving More Toward Luxury

For as much as Pontiac stressed performance in the 1969 Grand Prix, they began to walk it back in brochures and advertising in 1970. While still offering a 4-speed transmission and the new 455  CID V-8 with the camshaft from the 428 CID H.O. engine, they dropped the standard 455 CID 360 HP V-8 found in other Full Size Pontiacs.  The option list shrank – and so did sales – down 40%.

1970 Pontiac Grand Prix Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix

For 1970. vertical grille inserts replaced the horizontal bars of the 1969, the “Grand Prix” nameplates were moved from the lower cowls to the rear C-pillars and the vertical chromed louvers from the C-pillars down to the lower cowls. The optional 428 CID V-8 that had been rated at 370 and 390 HP was replaced by a new 370 HP 455 CID unit with 500 ft. lbs. of torque versus 472 for the 428. The base 350 hp 400 CID engine was still standard, and the low-compression 400 CID V-8 was available – with a two-barrel carburetor. While the 3-speed manual was considered standard, the T-400 automatic transmission was a no cost option.

Interior trim also received minor revisions, and surprisingly a bench seat with center armrest returned as a no-cost option that could replace the standard Strato bucket seats and console. Bench seat-equipped cars included a steering column-mounted shifter with with either the 3-speed manual or automatic transmission – and requiring a dashboard-mounted glove box! Power front disc brakes became standard equipment this year. Sales dropped 40%, with a total of 65,750 delivered.

The 428 CID V-8 disappeared from the entire Pontiac line, replaced by the 455. Unlike the previous year, the base 455 of 360 HP was not available in the Grand Prix, with only the equivalent of the former H.O.  offered, using the HO camshaft/carburetor, but rated at 370 HP.


Disc Brakes, an option in 1969, were now standard. The increased stopping power added more high speed cornering capability as well as added safety.

Series 276 – A minimum of styling changes, such as tail/amp revisions and recessed door handles, appeared on 1970 Grand Prix models. “Grand Prix”script replaced chrome slash moldings on the rear roof pillar. Standard equipment included dual exhaust. Interiors retained front Strato-Bucket  seats, integral console with floor shift, carpeted lower door panels and trim panels, chrome body decor molding and special upholstery trims. The 4-speed manual transmission was available across the model line.  In a surprising twist, a bench seat was an option. moving the shifter to the steering column and deleting the 4-speed as a choice.

SJ Option – While not considered a separate model, the “SJ” option was available again at $223-244 extra. There was enough significance in the add-ins the option delivered to consider it separately. Against the standard Grand Prix was included ‘SJ’ badges, lamp group, larger tires, and the 455 cubic inch V-8. The 4-speed manual transmission was available across the model line. 

1970 Pontiac Grand Prix Facts – Hurst SSJ

NOTE – While not a part of Pontiac factory production, the SSJ is notable for Hurst’s attempt to personalize the then popular Grand Prix. The Grand Prix SSJ was produced by Hurst Performance Research Corporation, a subsidiary of Hurst Performance, Inc. To order a SSJ, one would first order either a Model J or SSJ Grand Prix from a Pontiac dealer, specifying Cameo White or Starlight Black as the exterior color. Then one had to complete a Hurst order form to specify the SSJ conversion. The completed Grand Prix would then be shipped to Hurst for the SSJ conversion before being sent back to the selling dealer for delivery.

The ’70 SSJ Package
The base SSJ package added an additional $1,147.25 of a ’70 Grand Prix. It included Fire Frost Gold body accents and Rally wheels, an electric sunroof, a body-colored padded vinyl half-top, and specific SSJ identification. The package was available on both the Grand Prix J and the SJ, but vinyl accent stripes or a Cordova top could not be ordered. Virtually any other regular-production options were available at extra cost, but Rally wheels were required.

Exterior colors were Polar White or Starlight Black. Interior colors were limited to black, brown, gold, saddle, or sandalwood-ultimately depending upon seating type and surface. Factory completed Grand Prix models were then shipped to Hurst, where they received the SSJ conversion – then shipped to the selling dealer for delivery.
