1969 Mercury Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Mercury Mid-Size Car

NOTE: The Mercury Comet Name was reduced to a single model. It was still part of this series, but it was only available as a 2-door hardtop – body style 65-A. See “Models Offered” for more information.

In 1969 Mercury held the line in styling with just a few changes. The line consisted of Comet (only a 2-door hardtop, entry level vehicle), the Montego, Montego MX, Montego Brougham, Cyclone, and the new Cyclone CJ. The CJ model’s claim to fame was its standard 428 CID Cobra jet V-8. Of course, a station wagon was offered in 6 and 9 passenger configuration, trimmed as a Montego MX.

The Cyclone’s “GT” model was turned into a trim package that added bucket seats and a rim blow steering wheel, and outside a driver’s side racing mirror, “turbine wheel” covers, and wide oval tires. Of course, a Cyclone could receive the optional console, tachometer, disc brakes and all the other performance engines all the way up to the 428 CID Cobra jet.

New for this year was the 351 CID “Windsor” V-8, a longer stroke version of the famous 289 CID unit. It was a “raised deck” block (the distance from the centerline of the crankshaft to the top of the block (8.206 inches versus 9.50 for the 351). It featured a 4.00″ bore and a 3.5″ stroke, larger diameter crankshaft main and rod journals, larger valves and ports, and a larger CFM carburetor.

From a styling point of view, the changes were subtle. The new car had a framed horizontal bar grille. It protruded slightly in the center section. The Cyclone CJ received a blacked-out grille that was framed in chrome and had a single chrome piece in the middle running from each end of the grille. There was also a Cyclone emblem in the center. Otherwise, there was little to distinguish 1968 from 1969.

Mercury also built the Cyclone Spoiler II, Mercury’s equivalent to Ford’s NASCAR racer the Torino Talladega. The car was built with a flush-mounted grille and a rear bumper in place of the standard front unit to smoother the fascia for high speed stability. While a “street” model was sold to the public, it was created to homologate the car for NASCAR competition, a requirement back then.

Historical
Mercurys won four NASCAR Grand National races in 1969. Of note, over 5 percent of all 1969 mid-size Mercurys had bucket seats, 26.9 percent had vinyl covered roofs, and 1.8 percent had four-speed manual transmission.

Cyclone Spoiler – The Cyclone Spoiler model was issued with a 390 Improved Performance “S” code engine that made 325 HP and was equipped with a 735 CFM Holley Carburetor.

Cyclone Spoiler II – Mercury produced another version of the Cyclone for NASCAR called the Cyclone Spoiler II. The model was available in two flavors. The street version featured a 351 CID Windsor V-8 and was used to allow the body revisions for NASCAR racing. The version used in racing featured the 429 CID “Twisted Hemi” Boss block – the same engine as the one in the 1969 Boss Mustang.

The new 351 CID V-8 resulted from a stroke increase from 3.00″ to 3.50″, requiring adding 1.275″ to the block’s deck height so that a crank with this greater stroke could be used. The block was strengthened with heavier cylinder walls and bulkheads around the mains and the crankshaft main and rod bearings were increased to 3.0o” and 2.2486″ respectively. See The 1969 Mercury AMA Specifications Sheet on this engine HERE.
