General Year Information – 1968 Dodge Dart
Changes for 1968 were somewhat subtle. The parking and turn signal lights in the grille were moved slightly inboard and were now round. Side marker lights were added to the front fenders and rear quarter panels, in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Shoulder harnesses that were separate from the lap belts were new, and non-glare matte finish on the windshield wiper arms were for safety. The steering linkage, as were the windshield and rear window gaskets and trim-lock strips, were revised.
Disc Brakes were now available on all models, all engine choices. All disc brake card received 6.95 X 14 wheels/tires with D or E70 x 14 tires optional.
Engines Added
Chrysler Corporation’s engine “clean air package”, an emission control system, was now standard equipment in all 50 states. New for this year were the addition of a 2-barrel carbureted 318 CID V-8 in place of the high performance 273 and the new 340 CID performance V-8 – way under-rated at 275 HP. Many say this was done so as not to diminish the performance value of the 383, only rated at 300 HP when fitted to the Dart.
The standard rear axle ratio moved down from 2.93:1 to 2.76:1 in the automatic transmission versions of the slant six and the 319 V-8. A part-throttle downshift function was added to the Torqueflite automatic transmission in 6-cylinder cars, this was to retain city performance with the new taller rear axle ratio.
Hemi Dart
On February 20, 1968, Dodge released a limited option for 1968 only, code LO23 Hemi Dart. It was assembled by Hurst Performance for the Company. This engine package was not the popular Street Hemi, but the full, cross-ram, race 426 CID engine. These 80 special models were created specifically for drag racing and included a non-warranty disclaimer.
A fiberglass hood and front fenders were fitted. The hood had a functional air scoop and used four hood pins to hold it in place instead of standard hinges.. Lightweight (acid-dipped) steel doors with thin side window glass were used. The doors did not receive window mechanisms, instead a strap was attached to the bottom of the glass on the interior door panel to raise or lower it. The interior included only two bucket seats from a Dodge van. Any center console, the heater, sound deadener, the side-view mirrors, radio, carpeting, and door armrests were omitted.
These Darts were available with either a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmissions. The manual transmission cars (order code A-833) were fitted with a Dana 60 built heavy-duty axle with a 4.88 gear ratio, a heavy-duty clutch, and a steel bell housing. A Hurst floor-mounted shifter came standard.
The automatic transmission cars used the Chrysler-built 727 Torqueflite three-speed an were fitted with 8-3/4 inch center section with a 4.86 gear set and used a 2,600 rpm high speed torque converter. They were also modified with a floor-mounted Hurst shifter for manual shifting.

New for this year was the “LA” 340 CID V-8, replacing the previous 273 performance V-8. The 318 CID block was bored to 4.04″ but the 318’s 3.31″ stroke was unchanged. It had a forged steel crankshaft. A 4-barrel carburetor and a high-rise, dual plane, intake manifold were new, as well as high-flow cylinder heads. The engine was equipped with hydraulic lifters. The 4-speed transmission cars received a hotter cam. Power output was an under-rated 275 HP.

The 383 CID “B” big-block, was now rated at 300 HP, with the increase related to better exhaust manifolds for free breathing. The Carter Carburetor was also increased in size, with the secondary barrel size up from 1.56″ to 1.69″.
